$10k/year will be tough. Did you run the NPC for the schools? You might get FA when 2 or 3 kids are in school. NMF could help. Student loan of $5.5k the first year, a little higher every year after. I would look hard at outside scholarships. Women in STEM is pretty popular right now. Geographic diversity can help with some schools but could have additional travel expenses.
We didn’t run numbers for when our next two begin, but we just aren’t comfortable spending more than $10K and really don’t want her take out loans. There are several schools in our state that would be almost if not full COA. I think she just wants to see what her options are.
I’ll have her look at Missouri-Rolla and possibly Kentucky. Houston would be in a big city and she said she does not want that.
Thanks!
You may want to check out Virginia Tech, I know that they are very big with engineering. I’m not sure what kind of aid and scholarships they give out, but it’s definitely worth looking into.
I know you said she might not be interested in TAMU because of the size (my S21 is in the same boat), but I have to correct an earlier post about merit at TAMU. If she does hit the NMF, TAMU offers a National Scholars award of $42k over 4 years which should cover close to full tuition (it includes an OOS tuition waiver so it’s worth more to you if outside of TX). It’s a top engineering school, really great facilities in the new Zachary engineering building, and she might just fall in love with it. College town. Take a look at Scholarships.tamu.edu and scroll down to National Scholars. There are additional competitive awards that can make it a full ride.
University of West Florida in Pensacola has accredited mechanical engineering and has good scholarship money. Although not a college town, the beach is nearby. I sent you a private message too.
What you are really going to have to watch carefully is how the finances of these schools impact merit money. Keep on top of their websites and make sure you know the latest information. Lots of old information is regurgitated on CC and this is a very volatile time for college $$. If TAMU keeps paying big $$ for NMFS past next year color me shocked.
Hello. How are your views on UAH after a few years? My son is interested in comp sci or engineering at a school in the Southeast or California. We are in NC, and while NCSU is definitely on the list, we want to look beyond NC too. Any advice is welcome. TY!
Most people don’t want their kids to take out loans. I didn’t, and they didn’t have to the first year, but after that they did. Things change (my job was eliminated), costs go up. But my kids took the minimum they had to and so far have been okay about paying them back. My engineer has no problem making her payments or even more than her payments.
