Advice needed about teeth grinding

I have a guard I bought several years ago at Walgreens for about $20. I believe it’s called “the doctor’s night guard” or something like that. It is very similar to an athletic guard that one molds oneself. I have trimmed it to make it as slim as possible and small enough that it only covers the front four teeth. It is comfortable and does the trick…IF I remember to wear it.

Depending on how small you trimmed it, if you can dislodge it with your lips and tongue alone, there is a risk of aspiration, choking, or swallowing while you sleep!

What jdasmom described in #19 is the NTI. It is made extremely snug so it cannot be dislodged by the tongue or lips. We give our patients written instructions (and have them read and sign in our office) that say if it gets loose, they are to discontinue wear and call our office for refitting.

^This is good advice. By all means visit your dentist and get a professionally fitted device. You’ll save thousands of dollars and hours in the dental chair with a little protection now.
