<p>Our DS is starting his 4th year teaching in a few weeks. His application process was slow and not fun also.
He was offered a 3 day a week position in a perfect for him district two weeks before school began.
It morphed into FT at Christmastime. So, the end of summer shuffle is pretty common, I think.</p>

<p>Excellent news! It’s really often who you know in hiring at schools. So many resumes the hiring person needs a reason to get yours to the top.</p>

<p>(I didn’t see it mentioned earlier, but a lot of union agreements require that openings be first made available to existing tenured staff, which often pushes teacher hiring well into summer. Additionally, teachers in many districts aren’t required to turn in retirement notice until quite late in the school year. It makes teacher hiring very challenging.)</p>

<p>In Texas, teachers have until 45 days before the start of the new school year to be able to be released from a contract that they may have signed back in April or May. Then there’s the trickle down from there…Joanie has signed a new contract, but she gets an offer in June from another district, then her district starts looking for someone. They hire Terry, who works for district three but wanted to move to a district closer to home. That leaves an opening at Terry’s school in mid-July.<br>
If any young grads are still looking, email all those teachers who thought you were great back in HS and ask if they know of any openings or anyone needing long-term subs. Ask if they know anyone who works in other districts that they would be willing to refer you to. Network like crazy. Most teachers keep up with friends who have moved to different places and would be willing to put in a good word. Of course you have to apply online and make it through the “filter” but having someone put in a good word often gets you that interview, just like in any other job.</p>
