He sent in his enrollment deposit. If he had not done so, I would agree…but he sent in the ED acceptance and enrollment deposit, thus accepting the ED offer in its entirety.
Doesn’t matter. OP is still negotiating the FA offer which was significantly different from the NPC. If the school requires the ED deposit while that is happening, it is appropriate for the student to leave other apps and acceptances in play because the FA might not work out.
The OP stated that they have not dealt with the college regarding the aid package. They are just waiting assuming the FAFSA will make a difference.
ETA…they could have asked WM for an extension AND asked for a financial aid award review, right? If that had happened, I would agree that other applications could have been left in play.
This does seem like a mess. Not only did they not withdraw the other apps they sent in a deposit for admission. I would be calling the school asap and talk to someone.
Yes, but not all schools grant that.
I believe all schools are now required to review special circumstances considerations. @kelsmom can verify.
This might all work out. The family was on board with the student committing to WM. So there is that.
To clarify, 7/9 applications were EA so I had gotten those decisions before W and M, I did withdraw from the other two colleges though
Then you already had a sense of what was going to be affordable…and what wasn’t…right?
Have you reached out to the financial aid office at your ED school about reevaluating your need based aid?
I hadn’t gotten aid letters from any college yet. The majority were waiting for FAFSA.
I haven’t yet because my dad thinks it will work out without the intervention…he simply will not call them. I’ve explained the situation already though so I don’t know what more I can do
You didn’t get an estimated aid package at all from your ED school?
Many EA schools send out their aid packages when they send the RD ones.
I got an NPC result and then an estime from my ED school that was 15k over what was predicted in the calc.
But W&M did make you an aid offer already correct?
So from the profile they did?
Or at this point, you are full pay?
NPCs can be inaccurate when parents are self employed.
@Winsto7 I sincerely hope this all works out for you and your family.
Can’t you call them?
I am sorry you are going through this without the help of your parents.
I could call them but I don’t know enough about my parents finances to be able to explain or ask for a re-evaluation.
I submitted the enrollment deposit before I saw the aid offer
All you need to say is that the NPC results and your offered aid had a $15,000 differential. But IIRC, you don’t have a copy of the NPC results…
I see. But now you’ve seen it?
I’ll say this - I don’t see how waiting to talk to them does any good - and @Mwfan1921 seems more expert in these affairs, but I believe if they have CSS, they have all they need. FAFSA won’t impact anything as you’re not a pell family - it will just make you loan eligible for federal.
If they state (I can’t find it anymore) that the most you can get OOS is 25% of COA is $64K, that would tell me the most you can get - no matter what - is $16K - which then puts you at $48K (this year’s cost) direct + the indirect.
Can your dad afford $48K - which seems to me would be the lowest you could get?
But if the student gets a partial Pell Grant plus takes the Direct Loan, that could further reduce the costs. I don’t know if WM estimated a Pell or not in this students estimated FA award. If not, that could further help.
