Being excited about taking psychology is a good reason to take psychology
My son almost did not take a lab science in senior year. He was thinking about applying to business / economics, and a college counselor told him that it was not necessary to take another lab science.
At the last possible minute my son switched to a lab science (physics). And then he changed his mind about majors, and applied to engineering instead of business / economics. In his case, in retrospect, not taking a science class might have ended up closing some doors for him.
So, I’m just responding to what you said, that “he has not ruled out something in the health sciences.” I’m not an expert, but I would guess that Bio would be stronger for that path. On the other hand, it’s also important to take classes he’s excited about!
The reality is that for selective schools a senior year lab science is generally > EMT certification, especially with only two years of lab science so far. Is AP Chem an option? Can he do the EMT certification in the summer?
He says he would prefer to take AP Bio over AP Chem. So I guess the switch would be AP Bio instead of EMT. I don’t think he’d be willing to give up his summer job to do the EMT training. Maybe there is another health sciences class he can take since EMT was a double period.
Thanks everyone for helping me think this through.
My son told me he wasn’t sure if it was a lab class. I know, I am SMH. He seems like he’s learning a lot in there and he has a high A but the labs can’t be very rigorous or memorable if he doesn’t know! I actually emailed his counselor yesterday to find out for sure.
If you’re using Centre College as a safety, he really should have another lab science instead of an EMT class. Centre’s common data set says that 2 yr of science is required but 4 is recommended.
He ended up having an extra slot in his schedule and is adding APES. I want him to have some say in it — I’m sure AP Bio would be “better” but he needs to feel like he is making his own choices. He is doing an athletic pre-read with one of his schools in June so hopefully we will get some feedback at that point if there are any issues with the schedule.
