Advice Requested on College List - CS Major, 30-40k out of pocket max [KY resident, 3.9 GPA, 214 PSAT in 10th grade, so NMSF is possible with 11th grade PSAT]

This is the third recommendation for Buffalo in this thread, and a strong one at that.

The school was not on my radar at all and I’ll happily spend some time looking into it. Appreciate the feedback!

Good to know!

I mentioned earlier that my son would be third generation grad from UIUC but Pitt is the other college we have a family connection to. He has an aunt on faculty there and we’ll be visiting and applying for sure, knowing it may be a stretch cost wise.

We can also probably afford a bit more - my estimate is on the conservative side. We’ll be a full pay family the first two years but I don’t know how to figure out aid when we have two in school. I need to read more on it, but didn’t the formula change where that’s no longer a factor?

U Dayton has gotten very expensive. My S24 from KY with 4.0/13 AP classes got a very good merit offer from them, in their CS program, but in my head I think it was still close to 50K a year.
He also got into Colorado School of Mines in their CS program but it would also be right below 50K with maximum out of state merit.
You can’t go wrong with Purdue, if he can get in. We’ve had NMF get dinged from Purdue in CS in the last 2 admission cycles from our private high school.
I’m sure you have both Xavier and UCincy on your list (I think you mentioned Cincinnati).
If you are looking at Ohio State check out Denison - that is where my S24 ended up applying ED so he pulled all his outstanding apps.
If you can figure out a CSS school, that will be helpful when you have 2 in college as most are taking into consideration multiples in college.

Wasn’t thinking WKU at all, but that’s an easy enough visit.

A 33 ACT is already worth a $5k scholarship at UK or UL, + KEES money, so that’s getting into half tuition range. I’m sure WKU is similar.

So yes, we absolutely have good in-state options that meet our price range. May need to talk to my son about not being too quick to dismiss the local universities. It’s tough though- both my wife and I were adamant about leaving home when we went to college and we’re supportive of that goal…

I’m worried Denison will be in a too small town for his tastes, but it may be worth exploring.

Great heads up on CSS, I know I need to look into it but it’s been on the back burner

Utah is likely roughly affordable with residency ($50K first year, under $30K after that), but getting additional merit for non-WUE students is tough without 4.0UW or close to it (and 7-8+ APs, but that seems OK). It is a great school for outdoorsy kids.

Oxford is a small town, but it is a nice little college town. However, Miami is a school of about 20K undergraduates so kids find lots to do with clubs, sports etc. And Cincy only about 45 minutes away. The campus is beautiful and the facilities are very nice. I would go take a look.

Lots of merit for OOS students with stats like your son has. Plus like Dayton cost stays the same all 4 years so you don’t have to worry about the inevitable 3-5% increases every year.

Yes, the new fafsa doesn’t give a benefit for siblings in college at the same time. Right now we have 3 in, but the only FA we get is some of the federal loans are subsidized.
