Affordable Care Act Scene 2 - Insurance Premiums

I understand why your mother’s doctor got her admitted (unnecessarily, apparently) to the hospital to get rehab, but I also understand why Medicare is cracking down. Three days in the hospital costs a lot of money, probably more than the entire cost of the rehab. You saved your mother money, but you cost the rest of us more than you saved.

CF- So why is that money more important to you than the however many millions clearly wasted on a broken website which was way overpriced even if it worked and now we pay even more to build it again? Because is was a one-time oops? It seems blatantly incompetent. I’m genuinely curious.

flossy, how much does Obamacare cost the first 10 years?

Does anyone actually know that? And how? Projections are never reality with these things.

Yes… People do know…

The costs are over 1 trillion…and aca is paid for.

When we look at problems, context is important.
I would rather not waste a few hundred million, but we are talkung about a program that is over 100 billion a year…

Because five BILLION dollars every year is more important than a few hundred million once. The overpayment to Medicare Advantage-- not the entire cost, just the overpayment-- is five billion dollars a year.

^it’s all important. I wish everyone would realize that, especially those in charge of our money.

No…

There are costs and there are costs…

So if the ACA is paid for, it should incur no new taxes beyond what they’ve already established, and no new debt. Not by the states or federal government. Awesome.

If only there is a way I could bet against that for future cost overruns, debt and additional taxes…I think I would collect big time.

Extremely unlikely. The CBO’s projections were based on assumptions that were fed to them by the writers of the law. Essentially all they did was run an adding machine tape on, uh questionable, data.

Beyond that, you can see that the funding assumptions are not panning out. Employer Mandate has been delayed. Individual Mandate is now a tax, and one that cant be really collected. Medical Device and Cadillac Health Plan tax are so disliked they may not survive.

And of course the projection far as the young, health cash cows signing up to be sheared to fund the program that was also an assumption without an experiential basis.

What are the taxes busdriver11?

What are the projected surplus or deficits?

Argbargy, how much does the employer mandate cost?

The medical device tax brings in?

The CBO had it at $30B.

^^How can I project what future tax increases will be to fund the costs? I can’t even begin to guess. But I am willing to take a bet that there will be large tax increases and increased debt. The projections are all based upon a large number of healthy people signing up and paying far more into the system than they will receive. I don’t think there are any valid projections for something this size, that requires so many complete guesses. They can throw around numbers all they want to fit their desired conclusions, but this is an entitlement that will never go away. Could they ever adequately have projected the cost of Medicaid and Medicare? Legalize several million illegal immigrants, many of whom will get massive subsidies for health care, and you have a larger than expected number of people who are paying little overall dollars into healthcare.

Not saying any of this is right or wrong, just saying that it is going to cost huge sums of money, and I believe that those who think it’s a wash are wrong. This will be very expensive. Maybe worthwhile, but very, very expensive.

Argbargy, how much does the employer mandate cost?

What is supposed to happen to the budget in 10 years with ACA?

It’ll be a wash or even a cost savings if the cost controls work out. But perhaps that’s a vain hope. OTOH, the US does pay almost twice as much per person for health care as any other country. The opportunities for savings exist, if we can find them.

The 10 year cost at the last CBO estimate is now 1.363T.

Revenue projections are also $114B off the previous baseline. But that assumes that none of the revenue sources are repealed.

Cadillac tax, which unions strongly oppose, would leave an additional 137B hole.

Busdriver1, what are the taxes that are already on the books?

If the taxes that are going to be used for ACA are reduced then ACA can have some problems. I am assuming that all of us who are fiscally conservative are going to be opposed to cutting these taxes.

Employer Mandate is $150B so delaying a year cost $15B.

Ok… I am driving. I am going to look at the numbers later.

If you have a link with the latest CBO projections that would be great. :)
