Affordable Care Act Scene 2 - Insurance Premiums

If she just puts that she has a yearly income of $20K or whatever, then she would be eligible for subsidies, though. I think. But now I am confused. If someone who has a $250,000 salary loses their job in September, they’re not going on Medicaid, are they?

No, I misunderstood your post. We have a deal: 500,000 people in paid plans (as long as the 800,000 Covered California goal for March 31 means what you say: people as opposed to plans).

Ok, thanks. I just remembered that since she won’t turn 27 before she graduates, then she can go back on our plan. Except we are probably going to the exchange next year (or maybe Cobra). I will have to sort this out when the time comes. There are too many contingencies to worry about it now.

Ok… Great.

Hm, that’s a good question, CF. I doubt it. I’m not sure how they’re calculating it then.

Hmm…

“If someone who has a $250,000 salary loses their job in September, they’re not going on Medicaid, are they?”

That would be consistent with everything else we know about this law.

If Bay’s kid is a dependent on her tax return, is she eligible for Medicaid or her own subsidized plan?

The person aho made 250,000 is going to receive unemployment.

How does that fit into the medicaid equation?

People who are dependents on other people’s tax returns are not eligible to buy insurance with subsidies.

By the way, GP, there are already around 317,000 signups in California, and the first deadline isn’t until next week. Some of those people won’t pay, but I’d say it looks bad for the Pooch team.

CF, that number includes Medicaid. I think we’re talking around 150,000. The Medicaid signups are not included in this bet.

My D is not currently claimed as our dependent. If we do claim her, it won’t be until we file in 2015. Not sure how all that factors into the determination for next year.

Sorry, GP, that number doesn’t include Medicaid. The Medicaid number is another ~780,000, including around 600,000 who were in a sort of pre-Medicaid and have been moved to Medicaid. Which is called Medi-Cal in California, for some reason.

Eh, if it’s just pride on the line, I’m jumping on team dstark. 500k by March 31st? Cheers!

If your D gets a premium subsidy in 2014, and then you claim her as a dependent for your 2014 taxes (filed in 2015), then I think the IRS might notice and make her pay back the subsidies.

I don’t see your number in this article.

Go right to the Covered California press release:

In fact, preliminary data indicates that in just the past three days (Dec 16-18), 53,510 people enrolled by selecting a Covered California health insurance plan.

I found the answer, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to link PDFs!

Anyway, unemployment compensation IS included under the MAGI that the ACA uses. Therefore, it would count against Medicaid eligibility.

Still don’t see the 317,000 number. Also, how come we don’t have any demographic info. If these are mostly older, sicker, poor people, we are still going to have a problem, assuming most of them pay for their insurance, which I don’t believe they will.
