I completely agree with this. When I was working part time retail at a big chain employer, I was offered insurance - I fortunately already had insurance - but it was not good insurance. This is not the plan you’re offered when you’re at a Fortune 500 company that pays 100% of your premiums. Those premiums would have taken a very big chunk out of my paycheck, and it wasn’t a fabulous plan.

There is way too much discussion about overall numbers and not enough about the sub-standard care you will receive from these exchange/off-exchange plans. The supporters who love to loudly complain that the old plans were somehow deficient completely overlook what these new plans are offering. Sure everything will be find if you are relatively healthy but god forbid if you get very sick. Get cancer or some other dreadful disease and let’s see how much you will enjoy Obamacare.

Although this article is from November, it deserves to be posted again. It tells you what you can expect from Obamacare if you are one of the unfortunate to be given a diagnosis of cancer. When you have a complicated disease which requires specialized care from specific hospitals and across a range of specialities, good luck trying to avail yourself of the healthcare you will need in order to get well.

Just to remind the posters on this thread, my greatest objection to Obamacare is that many states like California have forced people in the individual market and, increasingly in the group market, to buy very expensive plans that are identical to the exchange plans. It’s this lack of choice which still irritates the heck out of me. I hate being pigeonholed to buy something I don’t like by a bunch of bureaucrats and politicians who have the temerity to tell me they know what is best for me. There may be some people in this country who need the govt to hold their hands every time they have to make a complicated decision, but I am not one of them.

GP, we know you hate it. Now you need to vet guys like Robert Goldberg. Unless you want people to keep pointing out slant and inaccuracies. You perceive “lack of choice” and substandard care for your own reasons. Thousands of posts and I can’t name a poster converted to your way of thinking.

When we pick a plan, it is not, from my viewpoint, some bureaucrat/politician dictating or holding our hands anymore than it was before: there are x plans, at various costs, with various benefit structures and we pick what we feel meets the needs we prioritize.

Nothing says exactly what you want has to be the plans designed by insurance companies.

I finally got all my W-2s in. As suspected, I did not make enough to qualify for the exchange (I’m in a temporarily non-expansion state) and I won’t make enough this year. I’m glad I stuck with my old plan for now and I will switch over to Medicaid once my state expands in 2 months.

The only thing that’s scary is that Michigan, to the best of my knowledge, has not released any information about how Medicaid is going to work. This isn’t surprising as I’ve been through their “system” before and they’re… incompetent at best when it comes to informing the public about welfare programs.
(Hm, I wonder if there’s a potential internship in there… lol)

Yes, but I would have preferred to stay in the individual market. I was essentially forced out because of the lack of choices in this one-size-fits-all marketplace.

Some people say “substandard care” and other people say, “Why should I pay for Cedars-Sinai to have Cezannes and Picassos on the walls?” Seriously. Cedars-Sinai has Cezannes and Picassos. If I’m sick I don’t need to stay in an art museum, I need to stay in a hospital.

Read the NY Post article and tell me where it is wrong. I know you don’t like the NY Post, but give me facts which would suggest very sick people are going to do better with Obamacare.

Question about cancer patients -is it true that chemotherapy costs the Dr. more than what the new insurance pays the Dr? So why would the Dr take those patients? … sorry kind of new to this info
