Affordable Care Act Scene 2 - Insurance Premiums

Calmom, the subs don’t get benefits because they are substitutes. They are paid per day. They are not full-time employees. I’m pretty sure every parent has heard, “Nothing happened today. We had a sub.” But, that’s not the point.

“We do have a Robinhood program in Texas but I don’t pay attention to how it actually works other than know some wealthier districts will get money taken from them”

Redistribution from the rich to the poor? Doesn’t sounds very Texan to me. That doesn’t even happen in NY.! Wealthy districts don’t get as much in state aid as poorer districts but my school property taxes all go directly to my district. State aid to schools comes from state taxes and other revenues and fed ed money given to the state.

I have had several friends who have wee jobs in my district, like sitting in the lobby of schools checking ID of people entering during school hours and making sure they sign in and out just to get the medical bennies.

dstark - Houston school district is doing better than yours! They recently handed out HP folios that I can’t afford personally!

Has your D decided yet?

Emilybee, thanks. I cant think of a reason the state cant help out. You may know NY better. Do you think state money could go to pay benefits or are there too many restructions?

“Every child in every classroom is entitled to have a real teacher in class, every day – not a babysitter.”

If 5 teachers don’t show up in each school on a given day in a school district with 40 schools, where do you find qualified teachers to substitute for each of them? This is a pipedream.

<a href=“Judge Rules Texas' School-Funding Method Unconstitutional : NPR”>Judge Rules Texas' School-Funding Method Unconstitutional : NPR;

I am sure I won’t have a kid in schools by the time this is final.

If you are a budget director for a school district, you have a finite amount of revenue to work with. Generally, it is money from local property taxes and state and federal funding. The people who run the district need to keep their expenses from exceeding their revenues. If Obamacare is going to add millions to their budget without corresponding income to offset it, then you have a problem. The person quoted in the article is correct. If you don’t keep part-time workers under 30 hours, something else has to get cut. It’s not rocket science.

“Emilybee, thanks. I cant think of a reason the state cant help out. You may know NY better. Do you think state money could go to pay benefits or are there too many restructions?”

I have no idea how each district budgets their state aid or if they are required to spend it a certain way. I should be getting my school’s '14-15 budget proposal in the mail in a few weeks, so I will look to see how it breaks downs and if there is anything that indicates the expenditure is from state aid.

Texaspg, :slight_smile: i dont know what a HP folio is. :slight_smile: My data point is several years ago. Maybe there has been an upgrade. :)

.My d is going to decide in 2 or 3 years. i still have time to influence her decision.

She has mentioned Burlingame ( not that far from. Stanford) and Texas. When she was asked does she know what home prices are in Burlingame, she said, “Not yet”. 8-|

Makss me a little worried… :).

" i dont know what a HP folio is"

I don’t know what the school district got them for but they run over $1100 at the base.

I drove by Burlingame over the weekend. It is pretty but aren’t they running out of water? =P~

Texas, quick question. I was reading the comments from the article you posted and people were talking about how ed dollars are going to build multi million $ stadiums. Don’t districts pass bond issues for stuff like that (and building new schools, etc?) That is how it is done in NY.

Wow, $1100. My computer is 10 years old. :)

We have a water problem. I left the water running when I brushed my teeth a few weeks ago. My wife ran into the barhroom. “You wasted 2 gallons… Everytime you waste 2 gallons, I am going to give our neighbor a dollar”.

After 3 dollars, I became well trained.

I am glad you like Burlingame. I always liked Burlingame.

Did they pay anything near 1100? Remember how Microsoft gave away PCs to some universities in the dark ages?

http://www2.houstonisd.org/HISDConnectEnglish/Images/PDF/HISDFactsFigures2012Final.pdf

LF - They have a goal to give everyone one. I am not sure any company is generous enough to give away 200k laptops.

Emilybee - They do float bonds and pay interest + principal amounts by using the tax revenue. It was a shocker recently when a perennial state champion school district in our outskirts could not pass the bond for building their stadium.

Texaspg, do you think one of your daughters may end up in California?

I understand that practicalities are different from the ideal, but the pay and benefits for substitutes should be structured based on the idea that their appropriate role is to be TEACHERS. Perhaps appropriate pay and benefits would encourage more qualified teachers to choose to sign up as subs rather than seek other types of work to pay the bills.

So I can’t win bcos this was THE Times?

The game is over.

I thought I just spoke unkindly about THE Times. 8-}

Boring, I say. :-<

The original absurd post of the day was from THE Times. ;)

Touche!
