@NYCMOML&L Actually no we wouldn’t need social distancing. In fact, these types of measures keep the virus active. In order to go on with life, we would actually need young people get catch the virus and become immune from it which social distancing prevents. It is when enough healthy young people survive pandemics that the old and vulnerable are protected. If we keep social distancing (a concept that I will note was never around when we fought and survived every pandemic that came before even far worse ones than this one), we will not only draw out this problem far longer than need be but a lot more of the vulnerable people will die as the people who really could become immune with little cost to themselves would be prevented from doing so and so won’t have built up the immunity needed to prevent the vulnerable people from catching it.
The reason why China has stamped it down is because they managed to build up herd immunity by the time the lockdown occurred. The timing until herd immunity had been reached just before because the death rate is the worst a couple of weeks after enough people have been infected. It’s what we see with most pandemics. It would not surprise me at all if parts of America have also reached herd immunity especially in places like California and New York. We don’t know how many people actually had cov and recovered but who were never tested. Some experts think the virus has been around for longer than we originally thought and think it may explain California’s low death rate. Lots of deaths happened before but they were chalked up to flu or other respiratory illnesses. Look up California may have reached herd immunity.
