Aggravated! Gray scratches on dishes

Another Corelle fan. I’ve had mine for 28 years. I’ve never noticed any scratches or marks. I love how lightweight they are. Heavy dishes aggravate my wrist.

I have Juliska soap dishes in all the bathrooms in my house–no marks, but I wouldnt expect it on soap dishes. We bought new everyday dishes a few years ago–Apilco Zen Porcelain dinnerware from Williams Sonoma. I love it.

@Bromfield2 I just visited the Williams Sonoma website - the Apilco is too white for my kitchen, but I spotted a set of pumpkin botanical dishes for 50% off plus an extra 20% off! I bought service for 12 - they won’t arrive until next September…and will only look appropriate fall through Christmas. I have Christmas dishes, so now I just need a spring/summer set? Or maybe a winter set, then a spring set? I’ll plan on paper plates for summer!

I’m with @txstella : same dishes; no marks – well. not from the flatware; we won’t mention the dishwasher but i’ve fixed that.

This is my Villeroy & Boch Audun pattern, and just as NYmomof2 initially reported in the V&B thread, they are getting the gray marks. V&B claims it is from flatware, but when NYmomof2 told them she also used V&B flatware, they sent her a brand new set of Audun, saying it must be a glaze problem. Last I heard, she was going to sell them on Amazon. I still love my dishes and will continue to use them.

Great memories here! I agonized about the gray marks, and researched the problem for years. I was frustrated because no one else had this problem with Villeroy and Bosch. When I finally contacted V&B, they did not ask about flatware, but immediately asked when I’d bought the china. It turned out that I’d bought it at a time when they’d changed glazes and there were quality problems. They immediately replaced
every piece. But I had a huge set, 12 of absolutely everything, and we’d had breakage over the years. It would have been expensive to replace the broken pieces, and I was tired of the pattern. So I bought a set of Wedgwood Nantucket Basket. I plan to sell the V&B but haven’t gotten to it yet.

^^^I have the Wedgewood Nantucket Basket pattern too–use it at pur vacation place!

Nantucket Basket is one of the patterns I thought Gourmetmom might like.

My everyday dishes are a Royal Doulton set of porcelain China that my mom left me. We had Pfaltzgraff and I hated them…every plate chipped. I finally decided to use the white China…it was just sitting in a box. It’s been ten years…and they still look brand spanking new.

When my daughter gets married, I’m suggesting something like this for her everyday dishes.

@NYMomof2 Does the Wedgwood mark? I have a set of Wedgwood formal china that doesn’t mark, but we don’t use it often and when we do it’s with sterling flatware. I love Nantucket Basket, but it’s too white for my kitchen - I need off white or ivory. Looking at Wedgwood Tisbury now - the color is a little creamier.

Nantucket White is bone china, so I strongly doubt that it marks. Edme, which is earthenware, does not mark. It does chip more easily than bone china, though.

I use plain white china from World Market for my everyday meals - you can buy saucers, bowls, plates, etc., mix and match, 6 at a time. I have been using them for years and they look fine. They are cheap - maybe $3 per piece.

I used to use fiestaware (not white) and that holds up well too.

@Gourmetmom take a look at the Jars Vuelta line–it comes in a medium white pearl that isnt as white as Nantucket Basket. My D and son-in-law registered for the Jars dinnerware when they got married–they love it.

Update! I bought Wedgwood Tilbury service for 12. Very classic, fluted, simple, creamy off white porcelain. Reasonably priced, too. We used them tonight for the first time - no grey marks. As with sheets, I’ll let you know a year from now how nice they really are.

Sorry, Gourmetmom, I just now saw your question. I guess the answer is moot, but the Nantucket Basket does not get marked. It is very white, but I like that. The Tisbury is beautiful! Congratulations on your new china!

My good stuff is Wedgwood Rosedale which apparently got discontinued years ago. I have service for 16 plus lots of serving pieces. I wish I could sell it but H wants to keep it. It’s very depressing how little value it has compared to what it cost.

My preference is white dishes as well. For years I used a stoneware set but had the same issue with the gray nickel marks I had to constantly clean. Finally replaced the dishes with a a set of porcelain three years ago and have been happy ever since. No marks, no scouring, and no more stoneware. I am sticking to porcelain from now on.

I was surprised to read this as I’ve never had gray marks on my dishes. I only use stoneware because I like to mix hand made pottery serving dishes with it, so maybe the stoneware is resistant. Originally I had Wedgewood Stoneware Midwinter pattern. Now I have Denby Fire Sage. Neither one showed any marks.

My everyday is Denby as well - it’s called Harlequin and the pieces come in mixtures of blue, green and maroon, so none of these gray marks.

The Harlequin is fun. I had some lovely cobalt blue dishes that chipped like mad. Now I have his stoneware which I love. http://www.kscopepottery.com/choose-a-pattern.html (The light set.)
