airline pricing games

Call me disgusted. I want to go to Baltimore in April. Between Easter and all,the spring breaks, the airfares are gouge prices. Plus lots of flights and cheaper tickets are sold out already.

I might just take the train. Same price. Less hassle.

@thumper1

Because everyone wants to go at the same time. It’s not like airlines can add extra flights during high demand times. They don’t keep a large reserve of unutilized planes just sitting around.

@MaelstromMonkey I know that. But tripling the prices is really a lot. I know, it’s. Business, and they can fill, the planes with triple priced fares.

I don’t think they have tripled the fares. They are charging the non discounted fare. You are just used to getting a discounted fare because you travel when those discounts are available. Or the discounted fares are already sold out. You can always get a business fair that is refundable, comes with early boarding, extra peanuts, etc., but those cheapies go fast.

Except on Frontier, which will charge you $25 for luggage and then hold it hostage for 2-3 hours after you land.

Like I said…I’ll take the train. Or drive.

Iglooo, SW will always let you change to a lower fare. You do know you will get credits that must be used within a year of the original booking date, and that each credit is specific only for the person the ticket was for? Unless you booked with points, then you just get the points back.

I have never had any problem with SW website not giving me the best available fare, and I usually check frequently for fare price drops.

It’s been a long time since SW airfares have been the cheapest I’ve found though. I miss the days when they were the “discount carrier”.

Sadly, Alaska will follow them soon, too. :frowning: I liked Alaska’s no-gimmicks, one way pricing.

Airlines are changing passengers from nonstop to flights with a stop and/or plane change, @MaelstromMonkey.

I read that on Windows 10PC, you can get a private browser (no cookies attached), by holding down control + shift + N. I’ve tried that for online orders, and when searching ticket prices, and it appears to open a new window, but I’m not so sure it is private. I still get ads associated with the inquiry. Any coders out there know?

I happen to live where an airline has its hub. Fortunately in a pinch they often can pull out another plane if one has to be repaired at the last minute.

Yup, airline pricing drives me crazy, too. Yesterday, a friend texted me a screenshot of United flights to London which were $380, $250 lower than what we paid. Ok, I was mad but, oh well, at least I could recruit some friends to meet us there. Texted two of them and by the time they got online (within 3 hours) the fares were gone. Annoying.

But then you might be using the abomination known as “Edge” ;-).

Google Chrome is the browser most famous for collecting and using data – to combat that they made “incognito mode” easier to access: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95464?source=gsearch&hl=en

It is not perfect, though. I would post links but they are all in private blogs. Juse Google (lol) “Incognito Mode Problems”

I feel compelled to mention again that I do not think any airline uses cookies to present custom pricing, so it is probable none of this will help.

As far as adding flights, its not just planes. It’s open gates and authorization for routes from the FAA, use of runways and air space. It can’t be done on a whim.

time of week hasn’t been mentioned, but I’ve learned and noticed it’s usually true Tuesday night into Wed are often cheaper times to buy.

I usually search alternate dates to a location before searching my dates of choice when I’m ready to buy - purely speculation but it seems to help with not ‘increasing my price’ drastically

It is supply and demand too. On game day it might cost $50 to park in the stadium parking lot, but on a non-game day you can park for free. Same for airline tickets during peak times. If the airline finds no one is willing to pay $389 for a ticket, it will drop the price to $250.

Don’t think anyone said anything about adding flights. What was discussed was replacing a plane if it was taken off service for some reason.

As for gates, several times when our flight has arrived early, we have to sit on the tarmac because the gate has another plane sitting there.
