Airlines are just pulling one stunt after another--now even less legroom in economy

My 89 year old dad says a huge 40 year old guy and a little old lady had a yelling match and almost came to blows today when waiting to deplane at LAX today. They were right next to him in the aisle.

LAX is a mess… The Delta agent assisting Mr. with putting him on a standby was really nice. She was relieved that Mr. was pleasant and friendly despite having a royal schedule mess up. What can you do if the airport is messed up? Yelling will not make a plane magically appear at the gate.

On my last business flight ever (I am retired), coming home from Europe, I had a ticket for a seat which unfortunately already had someone sitting in it. I checked his boarding pass and it was for the same seat, same flight as my boarding pass. I pleasantly pointed this out to a flight attendant while joking that while the gentleman in the same seat seemed quite nice, I didn’t think that they would want me to sit on his lap (and since his wife is in the next seat I am probably the one they should move). The flight attendant came back in a few minutes with a business class boarding pass for me (there was nothing left in economy plus).

Being pleasant with airline personnel is nearly always the best approach. Sometimes they will even help you out. However stressful and lousy airlines have become, it is probably even harder on the flight attendants than it is on the passengers.

The ban would affect trans-Atlantic routes that carry as many as 65 million people a year on over 400 daily flights, many of them business travelers who rely on their electronics to work during the flight.

The ban would dwarf in size the current one, which was put in place in March and affects about 50 flights per day from 10 cities, mostly in the Middle East.

Emirates, the Middle East’s largest airline, this week cited the ban on electronics as one of the reasons for an 80 percent drop in profits last year. It said the ban had a direct impact on demand for air travel into the U.S. and it faced rising costs from introducing complimentary laptop loans to some passengers.

The group’s CEO, Joe Leader, noted that airlines have reduced service by more than 1 million long-haul seats in the 10 Middle Eastern and North African cities affected by the March policy. If it spreads to Europe, “it’s simply a matter of time” before laptops are banned in the cabins of domestic U.S. flights, he said.

Not just laptops, tablets as well. Anything bigger than a phone… wonder if that includes Kindles.
