This was before there were placards and special parking.

Sitting in the back has never bothered me.

Maybe it’s because I’m only half black.

Airtran or Delta (I forget which) now charges $5 if you want to be moved up to an earlier boarding group. Guess they figure people will want to be sure they have a spot for their carry-ons.

USAirways has also been charging more for aisle or window seat toward the front of coach. I believe that frequent fliers can be upgraded to business class or premium seating for no extra fee if those seats are available.

It may or may not be worth it to pay the premium- a great site is [Airline Seating Charts - Best Airplane Seats - SeatGuru](http://www.seatguru.com) which describes in detail the seats on a given flight. Some bulkhead seats are actually smaller or narrower than other seats.

The best seats are usually either the front ones for the quicker exit upon arrival or the emergency exit rows which usually have greater legroom and the seats in front of the emergency exit rows usually either don’t recline or have a very limited recline resulting in even more room for the emergency exit row passengers.

^^^^I requested exit row seats for my upcoming London flight. I didn’t even notice if I’d been charged extra for them.
