The airplane was on a scheduled flight from Colorado Springs to Dallas - Fort Worth when pilots noted engine trouble and diverted to Denver. After reaching the gate, an engine caught fire.
I have to say, I am NOT excited to be getting on a plane next week with NOT direct flights.
That looked awful.
I feel the same way. However, in May we are going to travel to see a daughter graduate.
On the one hand it sort of seems like there are more airplane problems now than there used to be. I am wondering why, and suspect that even if someone knows they are not likely to tell the public.
On the other hand, I recall a business trip in 2000 when a colleague was taking the same flight as me, but one day earlier. Then I saw him on my flight and asked “why didn’t you fly yesterday”. His reply was that they took off, but an engine exploded so they returned to the airport. It seems that engine trouble is rare, but is not a completely new thing.
And the story repeats…
Is it possible that right now, any story concerning airplanes is drawing more attention than usual? Of course, these stories are alarming, but I am not sure that air travel is less safe. There are a lot of planes out there. Air travel is still far safer than a car.
I used to be a flight attendant. Admittedly, I spent more time on airplanes than most. I was on many flights that had mechanical problems, aborted take offs or landings, diversions, medical emergencies, and various other problems.
One thing is certain: DO NOT BRING YOUR BAG IF YOU HAVE TO EVACUATE! That’s why they say “leave all belongings behind.” You will slow down the process. Everything about trying to get off a plane in an emergency is at risk by a fool who tries to bring their bag. You might tear the slide, drop it and block the aisle, block a person, hurt yourself or another person by trying to wrangle it out of an overwing exit, etc… Your suitcase is not worth someone’s life.
Maybe we should have a thread for all the air and other accidents. Maybe calling planes, trains and automobiles- today’s accident.
I get what you are saying but that would be depressing to have to establish!
Agree.
This also means planning ahead. Your most essential items need to be on you, not in your bag. For example, if you take medication that you will die without, keep it on you. ID/passport, credit cards, mobile phone, and the like should also be on you.
