All-in-on printer recommendations?

CONCLUSION: we did buy the HP Pro 9025 at Staples.

We are doing the InstantInk plan.

It came with a small amount of starter ink. My husband signed up for InstantInk. We are doing the $9.99/month plan (300 pages/month) because there was a special that included about 2 years of ink at that plan… When he signed in, we had $280 credit (not sure why it was more than $240 expected, possible fluke). The new ink came the next week, but we won’t need it for a while. After that, I think the printer will detects when ink is getting low and orders it (or will alert us to order it).

The Staples store price was $399, but when we showed $369 on their website we got that price. We also decided to spend the $60 for 4 year store warranty because it supposedly allows us to just swap for new printer (or get $400 credit if that model no longer available).

NOTE: Printer inventory is low at stores. We got the last HP on the shelf. That was good because we were not in love with any of the few other brand/models that were in stock.

I just read a disturbing thread on Epson printers. Evidently if you load their firmware “updates” (or need to reinstall a driver), it locks you into only using the expensive Epson ink. I know there are warnings about using independent ink cartridges, but this update freezes the machine so that is no longer possible. Definitely knocks Epson out of any running for me.

Well update on the HP ink: I was able to locate the yellow on some obscure website and was worried that tit might not be legit, but it arrived today!

Didn’t a US court or the DOJ rule that printer companies could not render generic ink cartridges inoperable in their printers? Years ago I had a problem with using generic laser cartridges in my Minolta printer (always got an error message). Same thing with no name replacements for HP ink jets. Bought a new Epson XP 420 four years ago and have used third-party ink jet cartridges that have worked out great and saved me a bundle of money.
