Our neighbors own a donut shop. Just today, they brought us a big box and a second one of holes. I’m so lucky. I eat one and make dh take the rest to work.
My parents divorced when I was 7. I have great memories of my Dad coming by and bringing out the cardboard box filled with donuts. My favorite to this day is the cake donut with orange frosting. I also like a good cinnamon crumb.
We have several Asian immigrant owned donut shops which sell great donuts along with Thai food at one of them. A cafe I like makes gourmet donuts that are also good. I also am fond of Hostess and Entemann’s. I only eat donuts a few times a year but I do love them.
We have a local donut shop about a mile away. Maybe after Covid concerns I can talk my husband into walking down there sometime for a breakfast treat with a bit of exercise.
Cauliflower “flour” donuts? I’ve had the cauliflower pizza (dough) from Costco. I bet that might work? After the deep frying and the sugar/glazing, it would taste the near the same?
@deb922 I was going to post about the Cops and Doughnuts! We stop there every year on our way up North!
@abasket Barb’s Bakery in Northport makes these amazing cinnamon twists, we try to get them every year but they’re often sold out before we get there! And my H makes homemade fried doughnuts, very mildly orange flavored with glaze, so good! I don’t know where he keeps his recipe but I think it came from Bon Appetit.
We finally have a doughnut place near us, Yellow Light in Detroit. Opened last year and have been doing a brisk drive through business since. Have some unusual flavors like brown butter plantain.
Donuts have just gone to the top of my post-Covid splurge list.
An independent donut shop opened about five years ago that sells amazing maple bacon donuts. I hope it survives. Unfortunately, they haven’t offered curbside pick up and I’m not eager to go into their tiny crowded store, so that will have to wait.
One of the posts brought back a childhood memory. The Helms bakery truck that opened up the back and was filled with glazed donuts.
I know a lot of people knock the new “fancy” donuts but the maple bacon is really, really a good donut. Bacon should be crumbled, not a strip.
Maple bacon + donut is likely as divisive as ham/pineapple + pizza
Did anybody try cronuts (croissant-donut) when they were the rage?
I did not seek the out , but I if I ever encounter one I’ll probably give it a try.
At the farmers market I go to in Detroit there is a bakery that makes cronuts, they have a lemon cream filled one that is amazing!
@cellomom2 , Eastern Market? If so I did not go last year (COVID) but hope to get back this year and will look for them!
Yes! Eastern Market. White Lotus Farm, they also make this amazing brie like goat cheese, small rounds, expensive but worth an occasional splurge!
@thumper1 yes the Brown’s donuts are iconic, but if you don’t want to wait in the long line, head down the boards a few blocks to Ove’s for your warm apple cider donut fix. We are lifelong OC regulars (north end) and I don’t want to stand in the Brown’s line with all the shoobies! I have actually never been to the Fractured Prune, because it’s not a traditional OC establishment. But recently we went with friends to Dot’s bakery which is around 28th St - best jelly donut ever! Highly recommend!
Goody Good donuts in Laconia, NH. A nice big fluffy maple glazed - yum!
They just opened a Randy’s Donuts close to us in Southern California. The original is a LA landmark. The line was too long for a couple weeks but I finally tried it this week and it was really good.
I am not normally a fan of donuts, but I was tempted this morning…stopped in Dunkin and they had “Cherry Blossom” donuts (we live in suburban DC. Of course the icing was pink!
My husband can no longer even look at an Entenmann’s chocolate frosted donut. In college, some 40+ years ago, he got sick after eating a few. He is sure it was the donuts fault, so he has not had one since! He will eat other brands of chocolate frosted, just not Entenmann’s.
