All UVa frats on suspension

“incidentally, UVA has released reams of emails with Rolling Stone and are finally calling the article a lie.”

Where have they released “reams” if emails with RS? What I’ve seen is that they said - due to privacy issues, they can’t discuss this case.

I think it’s feasible Jackie reported the oral story to UVA, Erdeley made it into a gang rape. But don’t stop rubbing your hands w glee over discrediting Jackie, Marie. I can tell it makes you feel good.

Pizzagirl, Paul Farhi from the Washington Post wrote an article last night entitled “Rolling Stone never asked UVa about gang rape allegations, according to newly released email exchanges.” Can’t post the link but you can Google it.

Right. That’s not “UVA releasing reams calling it a lie.”

Sigh. My glee is being misinterpreted again and I don’t really think I would call it glee, at all. But, if you are saying that early on I was reasonably certain this story was false you are correct since there were glaring clues in the original piece that it would not hold up when subjected to 30 minutes of fact-checking. That doesn’t have much to do with Jackie except that a sleazy former tabloid agenda writer found a naïve participant willing to be to exploited and Rolling Stone was stupid enough to print her story. The emails are attached. It’s over 100 pages which I do think qualifies as reams. Sorry.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/r/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2014/12/20/Editorial-Opinion/Graphics/University_of_Virginia_Rolling_Stone_emails1.pdf</a></p>

Sure, I understand. Just because I do not agree with all that is being said is not evidence I do not understand.

However, you just proved I understand - your first response is “The students ARE adults,” then you also turn around and say these students are clueless about sex and have no clue how to say “no,” and do not know not to go to stranger’s rooms etc. where the in the world are those kids parents in high school? They really need to learn how to say no from a sorority sister? Really…talk about parents dropping the ball.

This is the “you cannot have it both ways” concept that will not cut it - you use they are adults in one breathe, when convenient, then say they are clueless kids in another and need every sex interaction regulated by legislation and all sorts of new rules. No wonder the students are confused; one minute they are adults and the other minute they are not. If students do not know where personal responsibility begins, guess what, they will not think about it, just act, and depend on someone else to clean up the mess after. And this is exactly what we are sering.

I think they released a whole lotta e-mails, probably someone filed a FOI., but I haven’t had time to go find them or read them. Too much cookie baking etc. occurring. Jezebel has them in pdf form I think.

Whoops nevermind - crossposted with Marie.

UVa did not call the Rolling Stone article “a big lie.” It may be a big lie, but UVa did not call it a big lie. The closest thing to UVa denying the story is UVa, in the released emails, calling one particular story, not Jackie’s story, “objectively false.”

The Washington Post article points out that it’s unclear what incident this is referring to. The RS article talks about “Stacy,” who says she was digitally penetrated by a student. The Charlottesville police declined to pursue charges, according to the article, and Stacy was urged by the University not to file a university report on the alleged assault. Stacy says she discovered that two other students were assaulted by the same student. The article says nothing about what punishment, if any, was meted out, or any details of the other alleged assaults.

In other words, UVa did not call the article a big lie. What’s the term for posting something (like “UVA is finally calling the article a big lie”) when you know it’s not true?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/rolling-stone-never-asked-u-va-about-gang-rape-allegations-according-to-newly-released-e-mail-exchanges/2014/12/19/1b9cc248-87cf-11e4-9534-f79a23c40e6c_story.html</a></p>

The original article alleges that the university was notified of a gang rape at a frat house and did nothing, That is false.

What you said, that UVa called the article a big lie, is also false.

Nitpicking. The jist of the article is the “big lie” part. Might there be some smidgeon of accuracy somewhere in those 9,000 words? Well, of course. But, that is not enough and RS now admits the story was false and the level of false is actually getting really rather delusionally strange and seems to have been intentionally overlooked by the writer who had a point to make and was determined to make it despite any conflicting evidence so I don’t really know what your beef is here, but it’s irrelevant to my point on this thread. The story has been wholly discredited. Admittedly, in fact.

"Erdely nevertheless quoted Eramo second-hand in her story, using Jackie’s account of her conversation with Eramo. “Jackie got a different explanation when she’d eventually asked Dean Eramo the same question [about why the school allegedly did not publish all its data about assaults on campus]. She says Eramo answered wryly, “Because nobody wants to send their daughter to the rape school.”

This is not even an Eramo quote. It’s second-hand from Jackie and stuck in Eramo’s mouth. Unbelievable.

I read those emails (quickly). It looked to me as though Erdely didn’t even interview Eramo. Her only UVa interview was Teresa Sullivan.

It is nitpicking. Could there be a kernel of truth to any of the story. Sure. Is it obfuscated by all the lies and white lies, Yes. Some people lie and embellish.

Also from reading the emails, it seems Erdely never asked anyone at UVa any questions concerning Jackie’s story. As the set piece on which the whole article hung, one would think she would have tried to verify some of the salient facts with the university, but no where in the emails is there any mention even any incident in Sept. 2012.

Sorry, Marie. I hadn’t found the 100+ email link.

Of all the things to attack Erdely for (and there are many!) none of them is that she didn’t interview someone who would not agree to be interviewed.

Nitpicking? I read Marie’s post and thought I would read that UVA called the story a big lie.

That wasn’t true.

I noticed that Marie edited her post. ;)

Wait. What are you talking about? Because people on this thread are not discussing the same topic, exactly. There is was the UVA Rolling Stone story false (yes) and then there is was Jackie raped (who knows, but not as described in the article opening or by whom and her friends have totally denied their role and come forth with fake texts and photos as evidence) which is really incidental at this point. The lie I refer to is described fully here.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/rolling-stone-never-asked-u-va-about-gang-rape-allegations-according-to-newly-released-e-mail-exchanges/2014/12/19/1b9cc248-87cf-11e4-9534-f79a23c40e6c_story.html</a></p>

Sorry for editing but I don’t think any substance has changed because I still think precisely what I thought the first time I skimmed the story in RS. It won’t survive an insensitive fact-checker and it didn’t.

Yes. Marie, You won’t survive a fact checket unless UVA said the story is a big lie. I read the link 3 times. That is enough. ;)

“In other words, UVa did not call the article a big lie. What’s the term for posting something (like “UVA is finally calling the article a big lie”) when you know it’s not true?”

I wish we had a word in the English language to describe someone who exaggerates and doesn’t tell the truth!

Narrative journalist.
