All UVa frats on suspension

Here you go, the latest news:

University of Virginia fraternity activities to resume under new rules

The rules seem reasonable enough. Half of the brothers at parties have to remain sober. Is that overkill?

The new rules sound good to me. A step in the right direction.

CF - that Pan-Hellenic council that comprises 8 houses - those are the historically black houses only. Those houses have agreed to keep half sober, but the “regular” (sorry, can’t think of a better word) houses, including Phi Psi, only have the three-men-sober rule.

I would hate having “stair” duty. [-(

^^They make the low man do it (most recent). My nephew often has ‘sober driver’ duty.

That made me chuckle.

It made me chuckle also - T-shirts with big block letters “I AM SOBER.” Oh my goodness.

Guess who’s assigned to guarding the stairs…

Maybe they could wear one of those beer hats but with soft drinks in it.

So the rule set by the administration is that there has to be at least 3 sober individuals in a frat house that has many more than 3 members that are underage? I think this is a sad testimony to where we are today on college campuses. Unless I have misunderstood the rule, seems like the administration has just waved the white flag. What can they do at his point? That seems to be where we are.

How much can the administration really require? The fraternity houses are off campus and privately owned. It’s a public u, so it probably cannot forbid it’s students from joining or going there. They are lucky to have gotten the concessions they did.

I agree Bay I also thought the concessions were not unreasonable and it’s fortunate that they were able to come to some sort of change agreement. How effectual will be determined. “Outside” kids could still bring in concealed fifths and there will need to be strong will on the part of the frats to “self-govern.”

The is no alcohol in the sororities (officially and at parties) so there are 16 houses in compliance right there.

I think it’s a step in the right direction, but personally I’d have a campus cop or an off duty police officer doing stair duty. And there also should be someone at the exits to make sure nobody is carrying out anyone who is too drunk to walk except to an ambulance or to help them back to a dorm or whereveer they live.In the latter case, though, I’d insist that it’s an ambulance unless a sober female goes along as an escort.

Hah, my son just told me at his uni that they already require the younger members to take turns being the “sober” persons so must not be “unusual.” He says frats want as many girls as possible so the “sober” watchdogs for the night do pick up and delivery of girls (and guys) in addition to watching the door and stairwells. He says “girls” don’t drink beer so he found that interesting that UVa frats can’t have hard alcohol. He says girls drink Burnett’s (flavored vodka) and they drink it as fast as possible and they don’t eat food .

Who would pay this campus cop or police officer? They can’t give their services for free.

I am just wondering what these 3 “sober” members are charged with doing? Are they supposed to “police” their own frat brothers and tell them “no you are too drunk to be bringing this girl upstairs?” Or tell the girls they have had too much to drink and should be on their way home?

If something really bad happens will the administration look to them for answers?

Any frat that chooses to have a party open to non-members at which booze is served.

Open to non-members (as in, you can bring your date, or invite the guy you know from chem class) or open to non-members as open to the campus at large?
