Alleged racist pose by Spanish National Team

Now it’s not just the basketball team

[Another Spanish team discovered making eye-slant gesture - Fourth-Place Med… - Olympics - Yahoo! Sports](<a href=“Sports News, Scores, Fantasy Games - Yahoo Sports”>Sports News, Scores, Fantasy Games - Yahoo Sports)

Oh Spain…

I’d hate to start another stupid debate online but does every single member of the Asian race have slanted eyes?

If not then that is a stereotype too…

Slanted eyes are not a bad thing. In fact, in American culture, macho guys squint all the time (at least according to a Garfield comic I once read).

Ah, that explains everything. The tennis team is really the one at fault here. The basketball team didn’t want to be defeated by those wimpy tennis players, so they made a more high-profile version themselves.

Spanish people are racist as heck!

Have people not seen a Spanish soccer match!? Everytime an African player receives the ball the crowd starts making monkey noises. Youtube it.

^they’re not really racist per se, just extremely insensitive

NEWS FLASH: Most Asians DON’T have “slanted” eyes - plus, Asians have a wide variety w/ regard to eye shape/fold (the most common being the almond shaped - which also varies from person to person).

So …if the Olympics were being held someplace in Africa would it be alright (according to stereotypes) for the Spanish team to pull down their lower lip or, if held in Israel, if they “hooked” their noses?

Now, was the intent racist?

Probably not, but it certainly was insensitive and lacking in taste.

What was more offensive was the way the team tried to defend the photo w/ the half-arsed “sorry if anyone was offended” apology (btw, another Spanish team posed doing the very same thing).

It’s not really quite the same, since Asians haven’t exactly been through what the Africans (slavery) or the Jews (centuries of European anti-Semitism, Holocaust) have been through. Yes, there was the Yellow Peril and Japanese Internment, but they were American, as opposed to global, incidents, and there wasn’t a massive level of deaths that resulted from them.

What I’m trying to say is that the Chinese should have better things to do than care when a nation that had been in decline since 1588, and only recently came out of a dictatorship and rejoined the modern world, showcases its ignorance for the world to see.

Not the same? Does it really matter which races been through in history? I can’t believe that you’re actually supporting racist gestures against asians. You really think that’s a legitimate answer you dunce!

lol, nbachris you really seem to have a twisted vision of the world.

Racism is racism is racism is racism. Stereotyping is stereotyping is stereotyping is stereotyping.

Who cares about the past of the races that are being subject to stereotyping and discrimination? It does not further validate or invalidate the point. Even though I don’t think this slanted eyes thing was as much racism as it was simply extremely poor taste, it’s absolutely wrong to say “it’s not really quite the same”.

I know I’m going to get some long-winded self-righteous philosophical rebuttal. I’m looking forward to it.

I’m surely looking foward to it too jrcho88.

jrcho88:

Whether you like it or not, nbachris does have a valid point. First of all, I don’t think that he is saying what the Spanish players did was okay. However, the reason why there is not as much outrage is because there has not been a significant amount of historical discrimination against Chinese people in comparison to the discrimination Jews and blacks have faced. And consequently, the Chinese have had no reason to organize and create groups that fight against this sort of discrimination.

Think about it. The only reason why, for example, the Don Imus controversy became as big as it did was because groups like the NAACP put pressure on people in power to do address it. On the contrary, since the Chinese have no equivalent to the NAACP, they are unable to get people to care about discrimination that they face.

Not saying this is right or wrong. I am merely explaining something that you may have overlooked.

lol figures CC (read: chinese community, since that what it basically is these days) would be an uproar over this

Riley: They was fightin communism!

The OP doesn’t support our troops >:[

No I understood what he said. Thanks for the clarification though.

I am just saying that stereotyping is stereotyping regardless of who the target group may be.

There are no groups where stereotyping would be “not as bad” or “worse”

To each its own, I guess?

Jrcho88,

I’ll keep it simple. China’s going to at least be a close second for the most powerful nation in the world in the next 20-50 years. Spain is little more than the world’s Disneyland. Why on earth should the Chinese give a damn what a few Spaniards do?

Racism is only effective if the offenders have any power, which is why white-on-black racism is much more unacceptable in America than black-on-white racism.

^Forget it, he’s just like the rest of the excessively nationalistic/self-righteous people who are the cause of PC.

LMAO…you know that it’s not wise to spout a Riley quote on here…;)

I hate PC. I’m not Chinese. So I’m not really sure what piccolojunior is trying to say here.

I understood what nbachris was trying to say.

All I wanted to say was that there is no such thing as “more unacceptable” racism or stereotyping. It’s all equally unacceptable in my opinion. An apple is an apple is an apple. This is hardly PC… wouldn’t it actually be the opposite of what most PC-nazis are all about?

I’m not really sure how that is excessively nationalistic (towards a nation that is not mine, nonetheless) and self-righteous…?

Self-righteous would be nbachris telling people that they aren’t smart enough to get into U of Chicago and other schools, that he seems to so love saying to other kids on CC. Though I do not know why any secure person would bother with crap like that, I’ll just assume he’s kidding. <– not self-righteous

So…this would be like affirmative action, right? The racist white power structure against Asians in support of Blacks?

Aw crap, now that you brought affirmative action into the thread. I give this thread 2 days until it gets closed/deleted.
