Allergic to hair color

Hi wise people: a friend has discovered she’s allergic to traditional hair color. Do any of you know any salon-quality hair colors that are natural/organic? My friend is feeling vain even worrying about it, but I believe there’s nothing wrong with feeling great about oneself–and she’s only 50. Thanks in advance.

What exactly is she allergic to? The heavy metals, the peroxide?..
Depending on what color she likes & why she is having a reaction, there should be many choices.
Ive never used Aveda- but Ive heard good reviews.

Ive used henna ( a mix of colors)in the past as well as Naturcolor.
However, I stopped using either on my hair as I found my lighter shade suits me better & a line of growout is more aging than my new color.

I think everyone should feel good about what they look like, but for those
who perhaps want to stop coloring their hair, or lenghten the time inbetween visits to their colorist, there are alternatives.

I lightened my hair from Lucille Ball carrottop, ( which used to be my natural color)to strawberry blonde (my current natural color)- but I also changed my hairstyle.
The haircut that looked good with darker hair, looked matronly with lighter hair ( to me).
( one of the problems with regular coloring is build up on the ends, getting a new hair cut afterwards can take care of that)

I had my hair foiled in three or four colors- a couple close to the color of my roots so that growout wasnt as noticable. Depending on her current color- that is a good way to increase time between visits. Its better on hair that is already lighter though- wouldn’t really work for dark brown or black hair, unless you like a stripey look. ;)

But for dark hair, I love henna. Because henna goes into the medulla, you get a depth of color you don’t usually get with other permanent colors. Henna both coats the shaft and goes beyond the cuticle, but the coating will naturally wear off, so if the color is close to your own, again grow out is less noticable.
It can also be great for fragile hair for that purpose- like for african american hair, it weights it down just a little so it is more managable & provided you dont use henna with chemicals added you can use it over grey.

When I was using henna, I was only using it 2-3 times a year because it was so close to my own color.( * in the beginning* ) But it made it so shiny & glowy I didnt want to stop. Until I went a little longer inbetween & I had GROWOUT!

Henna IS permanent. So do a test swatch first.

If she wants any type of red, brown, or black, henna is the way to go. (It also makes grey hair look stunning.)

SJTH - After my neck surgery I became allergic to most everything, especially preservatives. My salon owner managed to get her hands on the “secret formula” for Aveda hair color. I have had no issues with it.

Aveda is known for being natural (and expensive!)

You can buy nice color at Whole Foods, and probably other health food stores as well.

My hair stylist uses Pravana. I had developed an awful reaction to hair color (itching, swollen glands around my neck and ears), and she talked to researched products very carefully. I have been using it for a couple years, and I don’t have any issues.

Thanks all–she has very dark brown/black hair. I’ll pass on your suggestions!

Why not stop dying her hair?

^^^^^Because she doesn’t want to?

Some women are blessed with a beautiful shade of silver/grey hair. The rest of us poor souls were given a shade that makes us look older and washes out our skin color. I shall dye until I die!
