Have you looked into goats? They’re friendly, intelligent and easy to confine - dairies use strands of low voltage wires. They’re also affectionate and tolerant of people. Spend some time playing with and petting a young goat and they remember and seek you out for a rub. And they don’t have front biting teeth so you can put a finger in for them to “chew”. (Easy to train them for that: just put something on your hand and a goat will work it off your fingers.)

Of the basic farm animals, I thought the easiest to care for were goats. Sheep are pretty easy but then they’re sheep, with those fleeces and more hygiene issues. Goats usually just need a brushing, not a shearing.
