Alternative engine

<p>Haven’t seen anything about this, but my guess would be that the different variants have fairly different requirements. I know we’re looking at a conventional aircraft, a carrier-based platform, and a VTOL version, for example.</p>

There are two major engine variants for the F-35. One engine will power the CTOL and CV versions of the aircraft, while the other will power the STOVL version.

To date, F-136 funding has come at the expense of other parts of the program, reducing the number of aircraft built and increasing their costs. However, the F-136 team has claimed that their engine has a greater temperature margin which may prove critical for VTOL operations in hot, high altitude conditions.
