Churches are a great way to meet people and get involved. In my area “community” churches and protestant churches offer the most flexibility with religious beliefs (my husband calls them Christian light) and are very active with all kinds of activities. One near me has an environmental group, Friday night coffee houses just for social, and all kinds of things.
In our area, most towns sponsor adult education courses that can be a single class or a series. If your schedule happens to match the local offerings, it could be a good way to meet people. Our adult ed includes a wide range of offerings including languages, dance, exercise, hobbies, music, cooking, etc.
Many of our friends who have relocated have become involved in something in their community. For example, does your library have a Friends of the Library board? These volunteer places seem to almost always be looking for new volunteers.
The town parks and recreation programs here are also quite varied. Look for classes that are in areas of interest for you.
Join a gym. Most have a variety of types of classes including things like yoga, Zumba, indoor cycling, etc. something for everyone and a good way to meet people.
What about the arts? Community theater, civic orchestra, community or religious organization choir? Dance?
Any alumnae activities in your area? I’ve found some new friends through my college and grad school’s get togethers. I’ve also found friend through meetup and a running group that uses meetup for scheduling. Good luck!
This org helped me get my first loan and buy my business. The retired executive was the VP of Playtex bras. I thought this was the funniest thing but he surely knew how to start a business and his advice was invaluable.
I am thinking about one day giving back and joining.
You can check out activities at state & local park systems. Many will have schedules of activities on print-outs at the ranger station, as well as facebook groups, and regularly emailed calendars for members of their “Friends of” group.
