<p>Specialty license tags for colleges are popular in Florida. Purchasers pay a surcharge for the specialty license tags and a portion of extra fee goes back to the college or other chosen organization. What’s interesting in attached link is that sales and renewals for the specialty tags are down last few years which might be a reflection of Florida’s sluggish economy the last few years.</p>

<p>They are popular in Georgia also. I have to say it’s funny that they allow other states colleges on Georgia plates. I see University of Alabama,Auburn and LSU on license plates on a regular basis.</p>
<p>No, exclusive-school alumni do not have the lock on exclusive cars. Not everybody cares about having a fancy car or about advertising their alma mater. Not to mention, plenty of people are over their heads in consumer debt, including car payments that are irresponsibly high given their income. So just because someone drives a nice car does not mean they are successful (and of course their success may or may not be related to where they went to college). It might mean that they are so preoccupied with keeping up with the Joneses that they make stupid decisions just for show.</p>
<p>I noticed years ago the profusion of college vanity license plates in Georgia. I hope the schools made some money on the deal.</p>
<p>Generally, I’m with MaineGeorgia and HiMom…I love cars but as a status symbol they are not particularly important to me. That being said, I do have an alumni license plate frame on my jalopy.</p>
<p>One doesn’t have to be an alumnus of a college to buy a Florida college specialty license tag…anyone willing to pay an extra $20-30 can get one instead of a regular issue auto license tag in Florida. A high percentage of the people driving around with the college specialty license plates never took a single academic course at the institution sported on their license tag. Florida could make a lot of extra money selling Harvard University license tags to wannabee grads and posers! …cheaper and easier just buying tag than actually attending and paying expenses for the college.</p>

<p>That’s the part I don’t get. On CC, it’s assumed that if you’re well-to-do as an adult, you had to have gone to an exclusive college – huh? That bears little relationship to reality.</p>
<p>When I was 16, young and dumb, and my dream school was Penn, I did buy a University of Pennsylvania window decal and put it on my car (which was a 1976 Olds Cutlass Supreme - as you can see, I was really rocking it). Turned out to be a stupid move since I didn’t even wind up going there, but I couldn’t get the decal off. So there you have it. I have no other affiliation with Penn other than almost going there. My sister added her school’s decal, and then the car got trashed. No relation to either event.</p>
<p>This “test” doesn’t work for state flagships, especially those in states where everyone, from the valedictorian to the C college bound student, would love to attend.</p>

<p>Around here, you are far more likely to see decals for current students than alumni license plates. </p>
<p>I don’t think use of “alumni of” is necessarily incorrect since it doesn’t have to refer to the individual driving the car. He or she is a member of the group called “alumni of XXX University.”</p>
<p>I’m just glad we see fewer black labrador - the black dog emblem - stickers. I was beginning to feel they weren’t optional, but they’ve faded as people have embraced tiny dogs.</p>

<p>Really? I consider myself kind of persnickety about this kind of thing–I even taught Latin briefly–but this surprises me. Those license plate frames don’t bother me in the slightest. I know that I’m a Harvard alumnus, but I belong to the Harvard Alumni Association. I have always assumed that the intention was to identify the car owner as a member of the alumni association, not to identify the owner as “an alumni.”</p>
<p>As for the prestige correlation…I’m thinking about the cars driven by Ivy alums who are friends of mine: Honda Accord, Honda Fit, Prius, 10-year-old Toyota Highlander, Camry Hybrid, 8-year-old Camry, Honda Odyssey, Subaru Forester, Ford Fusion, NYC subway system. I’m actually wracking my brain to come up with an Ivy grad I know who does drive a Lexus, BMW, Tesla or Jaguar.</p>
<p>FWIW, the license plate holder on the back of my 10-year-old Honda is for my daughter’s college. The one on the front is for my favorite baseball team.</p>
<p>Around my town it’s almost all Husky or Cougar (UW and WSU), and then the advertisements for Stanford. I’n not sure why Stanford grads feel the need to display their school colors when most others do not.</p>
<p>College sweatshirts on adults are pretty common. It may be the easiest gift for Christmas shopping for a kid away at college.</p>
<p>Texas has an agreement with a company to provide a wide assortment of vanity plates. Out of state colleges, even high schools. They are fund-raisers for the group involved, usually.
