Am i African-American?

<p>This is a really old thread, so I’ll lock it now that Northstarmom has kindly posted the definitive federal definition. In the United States, “African American” on college applications, if you carefully read the definition, ends up being a synonym for “black,” and not all persons from the continent of Africa fit that category, as is made very clear in the definition of the category “white”: </p>

<p>Black or African American. A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa. It includes people who indicate their race as “Black, African Am., or Negro,” or provide written entries such as African American, Afro American, Kenyan, Nigerian, or Haitian.
