I’ve certainly been reporting more newby offenders than I remember doing in recent years.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
That part I would agree with. I can’t recall having had to insert myself into so many of these conversations in past years.
Me, either!
I would say there are more “race” trolls, but otherwise it’s pretty typical. We are constantly dealing with “repeat offenders.” That never changes!
I myself have been guilty of speaking my mind on some of these threads but I am curtailing my posts and focusing on solely being helpful.
Yes, more racism now than before. But not that it was absent before. It is also more blatant now.
Not surprising given the general increase in racism.
Sad!
This time of year does not exactly tend to bring out the best in some college applicants
It is the parents, though.
Re: “grievance politics”
Seems like most of that comes from the “upper middle class that does not get financial aid” being resentful of LI, 1G, URM, etc. (but not legacy, athletes, development, or celebrity relation). Usually, there is the assumption of more FA than there actually is for LI, and an exaggerated assumption of URM and/or 1G effect in admission.
But then this class probably sees mostly downward mobility for its kids. Few will move up to the plutocrat class, but there is plenty of room to fall. And more competition from those below makes it seem harder to avoid falling, if one thinks in zero sum terms.
They’re focusing their grievances on the wrong “enemy”.
@doschicos who is the right “enemy”?
The general trend toward a winner-take-all economy where economic gains are not widely shared by participants and contributors leads to more zero-sum or negative-sum thinking, where self-interest encourages people to think of other easily-definable sets of people as “enemies” or outgroups to be excluded from opportunity to compete.
Your conspiracy theory seems centered on posts pushing what often are conspiracy theories about admissions.
You are right, but don’t we see this sort of thing every year? Maybe it’s up a bit this year, but it’s happened before.
If I thought it were a conspiracy, I might be led to think it’s a competitor employing muckrakers/crazies, people intentionally trying to make this site “ugly”, to the benefit of their own site(s).
Or maybe an old poster who was kicked out, taking revenge under a pseudonym. (which is probably more likely…)
@lindagaf …oh no am I categorized into one of those conspiracy ppl…???
Whooops, I think so. Sorry guys
I’ll try to be more careful and sensitive when posting stuff here. I’m really a new member btw, but I’ve been checking college confidential for years. I’m a junior in HS.
But tbh, admission are biased for good but also for bad reasons. That’s my personal POV.
Please let me know if you want me to discuss more regarding my opinion on admissions. I’ll be happy to pitch in while trying my best to stay out of the offensive zone.
I also do not believe that the college that you attend will significantly affect your future life. Brand name schools aren’t a thing for that I’m attracted to, especially for undergrad.
yes, I wholly support the claim that diversity needs to be present in colleges, despite all the sacrifices that would have to be made for a long list of qualified, but bland applicants.
However, my views are harming my chances at college admission bc i am an asian male for a science major… oh well The shame of rejection from colleges only lasts during high school.
I’m grumpy because of doing taxes. Not paying them, just preparing them.
@prezbucky it’s isnt only those threads, which digressed (perhaps designed to do so) into racism. On a,college subgroup there is a poster, who’s been flagged, purporting to have a child at the college, and making lots of negative and unsubstantiated claims about the college. That poster joined on the same day as the others. Mods are aware. Anyway. I don’t buy into conspiracy theories, it just seemed quite an odd coincidence.
@XCBikeSwimSleep , please do not bring up.diversity in this thread. Start a new thread.
I tend to avoid those threads, but it does seem that there are a LOT of them I’m avoiding all of a sudden.
If it’s not what you say, then it seems there are an awful lot more people making excuses than in the past… as though it HAS to be someone else’s fault that they didn’t get into the school of their choice.
@Lindagaf, thanks for reporting this and for flagging the dubious posts. We’ll look into it.
