am I on the right track to Northwestern?

Hi, I’m going to be a junior this year in Minnesota, and I really want to go to Northwestern for college. These are my stats:

French 2- A
English 1 Honors- A
English 2 Honors- A

STANDARIZED TESTS
Just out of curiousity I took the SATs and ACTs in 8TH GRADE.
SAT- 1110
ACT- 26

Also, I took a PLAN test that predicted an ACT score of 29-31 for me.

SCHOOL ECs
Regional Science Fair
State Science Fair
Journalism Club
Film Club (I am the President/Founder)
Leader in school fundraisers
Talent Show
Varsity Soccer

OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL
Very interested in film: I’ve won awards at film festivals, made short films, made documentaries, started film club at school, attended local film classes.
Interested in computer programming: Taken computer programming classes, I get paid to do PHP/MySQL programming for a local business.

LIFE CHALLENGES
I was born in Cuba, then moved to Spain, then moved to the US in 6th grade. Had to learn English since I knew absolutely no English beforehand. Also, I do not live with my parents anymore since they could not get a job where I live, and they did not want to take me away from my friends/life so I live with my grandparents now.

What sort of chances do I have of getting into Northwestern?

GPA is very good, those standardized tests are low… but for 8th grade maybe not. My plan said I’d get a 27-31 and I got a 31, however I have a firend who’s plann said 24-28 and she got a 29 the first time she took it, and retook it, and retook it and wound up with a 34 and will be a freshman next year at Northwestern… Do you have any leadership within your ECs? That makes a big diference. I would say that you are on the right track.

Thanks a lot for the response!

So far I am only a leader in the film club, I’m the president since I started it and all. Otherwise, it’s pretty hard to get leadership positions in the clubs here since lots of the times it’s a popularity contest, just like student council. I might be able to get a leadership position in the Journalism club but thats about it. Regarding the SAT score, I got the highest score out of my friends when I took that, most of them got 900-1000, and most of my friends have 4.0s etc. now, so I’m hoping that i’ll be able to get about a 1400 in the SAT. I’ll also be taking some ACT/SAT prep classes which hopefully will help.

I think I might join a few more clubs this year though, since my ECs aren’t really that great. I’m also going to participate in the science fair again, and hopefully go to state again.

Sounds like you know what you need to do. With that high GPA, you should not have much of a problem geting high scores on the SAT/ACT. Dedication is almost as important as leadership positions in ECs. Show that you are dedicated to the ones you’ve chosed to pursue. Your interest in film is a good example of this. Remember that it’s not about how many you’ve done, it’s about how dedicated you’ve been. Also, show interest in NU!! They love that! My friend who got in gave me the advice to try and get your name in the admissions reps’ heads and databases as many times as you possibly can. Admissions at NU is not all about stats though, they also consider Essays (which is the part that terrifies me), recs, and your character. Good Luck!

I notice you may be URM? If that’s the case, your chance will be excellent since your stats are already in the range.

what’s URM?

nvm I found out what it means. Umm well both my parents are Cuban, and I was born there. So that makes me a Hispanic, or Cuban or whatever option they have. Does that make me an URM? If so, does that help me?

URM= under-represented minority

would i classify by being cuban?

URM status is an ethnic thing, so if you’re ethnically hispanic, that should do it. In any case, it sounds like your life has been interesting so far, and that should give you lots of fuel for great essays.

I agree with the earlier poster who suggested you start getting in contact with NU as soon as possible. Get down there if you can for a visit and and a tour, and be sure you fill out the card when you do. Also, you have time to get into a summer program there next summer. Check out [NHSI for film and video](http://www.northwestern.edu/nhsi/DMA.html). (Don’t let cost stop you, if it looks too expensive - they do offer financial aid). There are other summer programs too.

Regarding your EC’s, it’s great to add to the list but don’t spread yourself too thin. If film is your thing, and you started the club, that will certainly help, especially if you’re applying to the School of Communication as an RTVF major. Pursuing what you’re passionate about, and becoming accomplished in it can help as much as being a casual joiner in several other clubs.

nan, again, thank you very very much haha. you are the must helpful person here by far, to me at least.

the program looks wonderful, but the fee is pretty hefty for my family, since my mom’s making about 40K and my dad’s making like 50K, but they’re paying their new house, the old one, and my sister’s 10K a year daycare. considering my situation how much financial aid do you think i could get? i don’t have a job, or a college fund or anything like that. my mom’s a pediatrics resident, but they get paid only about 40K during their residency, and my dad does research with about 50K a month.

Is there any merit-based financial aid? Because I am taking 6 honors, one of them also an AP course next year. Also, I’ll be participating in some more film festivals.

Thanks,

Ernesto.

You’re quite welcome.

My daughter recieved some financial aid when she attended NHSI a few summers ago, but I have no way to guess what they’d offer you.

It’s probably worth a try, though. The NHSI application process will be a nice little warm up for college applications, if nothing else.

I attended NHSI Forensics the summer before my senior year, and I will be a counselor there next week! A lot of fellow campers received some sort of financial aid, so don’t hesitate in applying. You never know what amount of money Northwestern can magically cough up. Give it a try! What’s the worst that can happen…you get in, but can’t go? A lot of people who attended this summer program were accepted into Northwestern once the admission season had begun.
