Am I really at a disadvantage by not attending UM?

^Correct, until the State Michigan passed a law saying the people won’t be favored/disfavored for jobs or college admission because of their race or any other reason like that.

In short: Being a URM does not help in the the state of Michigan anymore.

^Ehhh… and how is that enforced?

It’s not, which is why they still do it. If you want to believe it’s gone so you can sleep at night, then go ahead.

I don’t. I was countering those that do.

Ok, I’m not going to belabor this ad nauseum, but are you two willing to consider that when an applicant is given stronger weight if they’re socioeconomically disadvantaged and have done exceedingly well despite obstacles that there is a statistically increased possibility they’re a URM?

If you agree that is possible, then you could also conceivably agree that perhaps Michigan is not giving URMs ‘preferential’ treatment but is instead attempting to balance its class based on socioeconomic criteria and achievement in adverse climates. Ergo, they would in that case be well within the law technically and in spirit.

Not sure if you’re talking to me, but that’s of course the approach they could be taking. I have been arguing for the idea that they do not make decisions blind to race.

My point was that it is possible that they are BLIND in terms of race, but not blind in terms of socioeconomic hardship and achievement in adverse climates, meaning that white/brown/black or any other flavor of human that has done well despite urban education and poverty would have equal shots at admission. And that could LOOK like preferential treatment based on URM, but in actuality would not be. Make sense?

It makes sense. But that’s not what’s happening.

I personally support using race in admissions, I think Michigan NEEDS to do it if it wants to offer the diversity and environment attractive to top minority students (and top students in general) offered by the elite schools it competes with.

Apparently the school agrees, because they do it.

Tyler09: Are you an URM?

Your post confuses me. Are you suggesting that UMs competitors (other “elite” schools) are using race in admissions?

You stated unequivocally that UM considers race/ethnicity as part of it’s admissions process. You never explained how/why you believed so strongly that it is true.

Yes, I misread your post. Certainly possible.

I agree with that/the socioeconomic idea.

This is true.
