Am I Suffering From the Cluster Effect?

Additional schools in Indiana to consider (besides the ones that I mentioned above), would be Manchester, Franklin, St Mary’s of the Woods, and Goshen. I know several students with your stats that are getting good financial aid from these schools.

My safety is the University of Cincinnati (certain Indiana counties qualify for in-state rates). Its a good so I don’t think I need to pick another safety. I think my biggest worry is that there seems to be such a big gap (admissions rate wise) between this school and the others on my list and I will not have many options to select from once decisions start rolling in.

It is good to have a few financial aid safeties. What good is it to get into a school that you can’t afford? That strategy leads you to U of Cincinnati. Investigate the need-based and merit scholarship policies at each school. Read the acceptance threads for this year, because they are crazy, and have your parents do the EFC calculator so that you know how much your parents are expected to pay versus what they say that they will.

If you’re interested in the Northwest, Lewis & Clark would be a match school for you, and they have a strong international affairs program, that’s one of the focuses of the school. I don’t know how their financial aid is, though, I received merit scholarships. They do also have a nonbinding EA program so you could get in early for the relief of knowing you have that option regardless of how things turn out in march.

I don’t think I will be looking in the mid-west (way farther from home than the northeast).

I already have a few EA (non-binding) schools that I have added to my list, plus my safety (which has rolling admissions). So hopefully I will have a few options in hand by the time the other admissions results come in the Spring.

Did you want to go to an LAC out of state? DePauw in your home state is a very good LAC and a fit with your current stats. They also have been pretty generous with their merit aid.

I wanted to go to an LAC in the northeast. I’ve been getting mailed a lot of things from DePauw, but I would really like to get out of Indiana.

Make sure that your safety schools are both admissions safeties and financial safeties (i.e. net cost after non-loan financial aid is affordable).

If you are willing to go to community college for two years and transfer to a community-college-transfer-friendly university (often the major state universities), that may be a reasonable admissions and financial safety for many situations.

UC is both an admissions and financial safety for me.

@OP, have you tried the College Search function at CC using your stats that you typed in? You would have to run it a couple of times to see what it comes up with. I used it with my D’s test stats and GPA. Then you can look at each school’s Mid 50% test scores to see where you fall relative to each school’s acceptance rate. That way you will have a better idea if your stats put you in the “reach” “safety” or “match” category. It takes a while but it does give some ideas. Good luck!
