American TV while in Spain-is it possible?

Another possibility, I had my mom do this for me during Spring Break (much shorter time period) is if you have a DVR or Tivo or something, or even if you don’t you could record them via VHS… Pick her favorite show or a couple and record them each week for her. Then you won’t have to purchase the season, and you won’t have to be hit or miss with Reruns.

Well you inspired me to see if I could find Der Alte on the internet. It’s still going 20 years later! Some of the early episodes seem to be available on DVD. Guess what my husband’s getting for Christmas. :)

this is one of those times when I wouldnt do research for my kid…

As an admitted technogeek who does not have a TV at home and did not allow my kids to watch on schooldays, I am throwing this information out there to simply answer the OP’s original question.

Yes, your daughter can download current (and classic) TV shows, generally the following day, onto her computer hard drive for late night watching. She can download the individual ‘BitTorrents’ through a variety sites - the more reputable one’s are by subscription or invitation.
EXAMPLE: www.TvTorrents.com
To run the torrents (Note that these can take quite a bit of time to download) she will need to download a client server application. The two primary tracker applications are Azureus (which I find more stable) and uTorrent.

snowball, I spoke to my D and the city she was in had no English speaking tv shows available. There were some U.S. shows broadcast, but not the current season, and they were dubbed.

Slingbox: I love technology. It’s so cool that things like this are available (even if I personally don’t need them for the purpose they fill).

I have been studying in Spain for about four months now. I was actually doing research for a paper on american influence in Spanish television when I stumbled across your question. There are MANY American shows that are shown on Spanish television. Most of them are dubbed in Spanish, but some remote controls (not mine, haha) have a jewel button (it looks a bit like a Jesus fish) that will un-dubbed the shows, but if your daughter is fluent that shouldn’t be a problem. The main channels that show American shows are TeleCinco, Antena 3, Cuatro, and La Sexta. These are basic cable and every tv should have them (except for La Sexta in some far out places). These channels show everything: House, Grey’s Anatomy, the CSI franchise (HUGE in Spain), The Simpsons, etc. They have reruns of older shows too like 90210, The OC, and Walker Texas Ranger (if that’s her taste). If you go on the websites for those channels (just google them) they will have the line ups of which shows are on at which times. They are usually up to date in their airing, only a few episodes behind as far as I’m aware. I’d say anything that isn’t on those four you might tivo. However, there are also a lot of websites that you can stream tv shows from (albeit with asian subtitles sometimes). Sidereel.com has tv shows, and there are many more. But really, I’m a big tv watcher at home and I don’t find I have too much time to watch it here. Keep in mind that prime time in Spain starts at 10 or 11pm, not 8 or 9 like the states.

I have started using a new free US TV service from USTVNow [USTVnow - Watch Live American TV Shows Online](http://www.ustvnow.com)
They give you all of the major networks live in full screen. It really is completely free and I didn’t have to give my CC or even download any software! They don’t IP block but require you to authenticate that you are an American Citizen or resident (takes 30 seconds). There is a very cool network DVR so I can record shows even if they are not in my time zone. I may upgrade to one of their paid plans with more channels but you can just use the free plan. After a quick registration, you have instant access. I also like that the paid plans have no setup fee and require no contract. They say they will soon have a set top box available that they say should work with any kind of TV. This is great!
