Hospitals are losing funding which will impact jobs in health care.

Funny you say that - one of my son’s desired majors was atmospheric sciences. He got a minor in geography (focused on climate) but pivoted to engineering simply because he thought career prospects would be much better. He got that right - at least so far.

He and my wife have done some NOAA projects and on our visit to Penn State, they pushed their ties to NOAA and took us to Accuweather for a tour.

Crazy if this all comes crashing down.

Please stay on topic for this thread. There are other threads discussing funding impacts across other sectors. Thank you for your understanding.

I’m afraid it already is. Not future tense. I guess the question is how far down the crash will go.

I started this thread to discuss these humanitarian programs and how they might affect current college students who are anticipating doing them.

This all makes me sad😢

It is impacting all sectors. Just spoke to a parent whose kid’s ā€œdream jobā€ with a marketing department of a large sports franchise has been put on hold. He had spent time in stadium food services and last summer had an internship in event planning to get a foot in the door and is now left scrambling.

Perhaps the worst part is now the kid’s resume reads like an event planner not the chosen profession (sports management) the student thought they were pursuing and paying their dues for. Thankfully the parent seems patient and supportive.

Seems like all sectors buckling down the hatches.

Very sad. I did the whole gamut lawyer, foreign policy think tank, US NGO, INGO, international humanitarian work and we are all gobsmacked. I will say this for those whose dream jobs are international related. Keep the dream alive. In my office. People have backgrounds in nutrition, accounting, IT, agriculture science… In 4 years God willing the sector will rebound.

Tough time to graduate, though, and likelihood is many will make choices now that push them in different directions

Americorps funding has been restored in some states. I know there were some students and recent graduates affected by the loss of funding, especially for the environment-related projects so hopefully there will be new opportunities announced soon.

Also Teach for America uses Americorps funding to help the corps members pay for their masters degrees.

Same here! I wouldn’t tell them not to apply, I’d just tell them that they need to have a solid Plan B and even a Plan C, D, E, F…

Yes! Even in better times it’s best to have a plan B because you never know! My H’s friend got a summer job in college and when he went for his first day, the place was locked up and the lights were off. Apparently the owner had gotten in some legal trouble.

It’s so sad how they are getting rid of all these programs that do so much good and help so many. We have a family friend who met her husband when they were both working for Americorps and they had a friend from Americorps officiate their wedding. We know three people who did Peace Corps and rave about their experience. I have a colleague who did Teach for America and one reason she chose to do it (she grew up in a low income area) is because she was inspired by the Teach for America teacher who taught her back in the day. My nephew’s friend was supposed to start a public health job on an indian reservation and her hire date keeps getting pushed back due to lack of funding. And then there is the whole Job Corps closing…
So sad!

This is (was?) true, and the degree is obtained from a school with ties to TFA. The cost of the degree is very reasonable compared to other schools.

TFA salaries and benefits are funded by the school district. Many are invited to stay when the two years are completed.

So far (and it was just an upfront payment), TFA has delivered.

Good.

They also have grants you can apply for- ie fully paid attendance at a conference, including hotel, travel and food plus additional funding to set up programs at your school. Hopefully that continues. They do get a lot of private donations.
