Amherst College- Classes Will Move to Remote Learning to Mitigate COVID-19

Glad to hear a hasty graduation ceremony today is not true! I wonder what they will do as far as graduation for the seniors? My son and his suite-mates (juniors) have completely packed up their rooms and it has all gone to storage for the summer (boxes and storage provided by Amherst) so it sounds to me like there is no possibility classes will resume this semester! So very sad!

@CasablancaFan, are they offering on campus storage? This whole thing makes me sad as this time of year is great on campus, weather and so many activities.

I don’t know exactly where the boxes are being stored as far as on campus or not but Amherst is making all the arrrangements at no cost. The last two years my husband has gone to Amherst in May to help pack up the room and arrange off campus storage but my son said he does not need to make the trip this year as it is all done! My first impression on Monday was that students would just take clothes and materials they needed to study remotely when they left campus as there was a chance they would return. Packing and storing does not sound like returning will be a possiblity even if the situation with Coronavirus improves.

Hopefully the packing and storage will just be so they can deep clean everything.

They have offered on site summer storage on a first come basis in the past. D18 was able to store most of her items in the basement of one of the buildings last summer.

I am really hoping that this all goes away as fast it came upon us and the kids can get back to living their happy little lives while pursuing their Amherst education.

It would be nice, but given the timing, that seems unlikely.
Once a few more weeks pass, we’ll be close to the end of the semester. Kids will be spread around the country/world. It at that point would not make sense to bring everyone back for a few weeks.
My senior is sending everything home, leaving nothing behind, on the presumption that he’s not going back.

Ah, 20-20 vision in the rear view…
