I am glad that everything has worked out for your family.
She might not have wanted you to be involved, but I imagine she will need some financial help covering the $3k, travel expenses, startup costs, etc. And she will need parent information every year for FAFSA and CSS profile.
Make sure that she checks what is needed to waive health insurance coverage from Amherst, if she is already covered under another policy then she might not have to pay for it. There might be a waiver form to file and deadline.
Also like others said, once she is at college, the school won’t talk to you, so it might be a good idea to have her waive her FERPA rights.
She also needs to be aware that all scholarships or grants she receives, that exceed tuition, fees, books will be taxable income to her.
Glad it worked out. $3K to attend Amherst is very nice. That is less than CC. You are blessed.
Maybe I’m using the wrong term (that’s what my daughter calls her) or maybe I’m just naive.
This counselor only works with seniors pursuing college. Not any other kids. There are two other counselors on site that facilitate the responsibilities of a “general GC”. At the beginning of the school year any senior student pursuing college may sign up for a regularly sched “spot” - basically like a class. This person is to deal with that individual kid (maybe 60-70 kids? it’s not a large number) and help them through the process of determining which schools are of interest, how to apply, help with essays, help find scholarship opportunities, remind them of deadlines, talk them through their anxiety and help them understand paperwork…Not DO any of it for them but to make them aware and encourage them through it.
So yes, I still think the CSS should’ve come up in their conversations at some point this year. Unless she’s not had anyone apply to any of the 400 schools that use it…
60-70 kids is a regular load for a teacher - that’s equivalent to maybe 4-5 classes of kids - one on one. Maybe I’m naive - well ok! this is my first go round at this so yes, I am naive…
The fact that she most likely has been there for my daughter regarding other issues is commendable and I DO appreciate that never the less, a math teacher should teach math, an English teacher English…
But I also VERY much agree that bottom line it lies with the people who are actually making the decisions and will be for the next 4+ years.
SO, I DO appreciate her and I still think she missed a big piece of information that she should have been aware of… hopefully it’s now in her arsenal of information to share with kids next year.
again - crisis averted my kid’s going to school!
At the very least someone should remind the students that they need to check on the college websites what is required and any deadlines.
But at our hs the GC just sends transcripts and LORs, anything else is up to student and parents.
There is an online waiver form but if her current insurance coverage doesn’t qualify, Amherst will pay for the school insurance for anyone on financial aid.
Maybe it did and your daughter, when she is talking to you, didn’t mention it. My kids, who lived in my house and often spoke to me, didn’t tell me about things they’d heard at school about college admissions, scholarships, graduation, senior days, etc. One of my kids ‘threatened’ to take me off her portal when she got to college. I said fine, but then all the responsibility for bills and registration and making sure all the scholarships are there would be hers. Oh. Never mind.
I hope your daughter learned that it is a ton of work to follow up on all the forms and payments and filings and other things needed for college and that if she doesn’t want you involve, she needs to do it all. It sounds like you are very willing to help, but she has to be willing to ask for help or do it all herself. As mentioned above, she’ll have tax issues next year. It takes me about 3-4 hours to do three very simple tax forms for me and two college kids. Before college, it used to take me about 30 minutes.
I think you should talk to the college adviser and tell her you think she should have mentioned the CSS. Don’t be surprised if the answer is that she did.
