An Introduction- Starting All Over Again!

Otterbein sounds lovely. My daughter’s first college experience was an urban setting in our 4+ million city and she was not crazy about it. But the urban setting would have been a non-issue if she had been enjoying the program. She would be fine in either small, medium, or large metropolitan areas, she is not really fond of cold weather, but will also put up with it for the right program. Along those lines, are there some Florida universities that she should consider?

In Florida you could look at Florida State and University of Miami. I’ve also heard good things about University of Tampa and University of Central Florida although I don’t think UCF has an MT degree.

@austinmtmom Thanks for the CCU recommendation. It is good to hear a faculty recommendation as well. If you ask my daughter for her #1 priority, she will say that it is finding the right person to be her voice teacher and mentor. I think that is more important to her than the university itself. How are students assigned to faculty? She will be looking for someone with a strong personality. Interestingly, her favorite directors and professors have been forceful and opinionated. She doesn’t even mind brusque or gruff! As long as they are invested in her.

I’m not positive how the voice assignments are made now. You can PM AlexaMT and ask her. She can explain the process and can also answer questions about the program in general. I was there in the fall to see the music department concert version of Sweeney Todd. Dr. Benson was Mrs. Lovett and my D was her understudy. There were music majors as well as MT majors in the concert. And Dr. Benson - WOW - what a Mrs. Lovett!

vvnstar: UCF does have a BFA MT program

Hi! If I were an MT faculty member auditioning potential students, I would think your daughter’s ‘extra experience’ and greater degree of certainty about pursuing MT could put her in some ways ahead of graduating HS seniors. On CC, I’d suggest you look at two threads: The first is the by-program-type big list of MT programs (<a href=“Big List of MT Colleges by Program Type - Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1335445-big-list-of-mt-colleges-by-program-type.html</a>). Your first thought about the info there is likely to be, Great, there are 250+ MT programs in the U.S., with which do I start? Answering that, in one way at least, might take you to the much-debated, caveat-footnoted “best musical theatre schools based on Broadway alumni” thread (<a href=“Best Musical Theatre Schools based on Broadway Alumni - Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1479281-best-musical-theatre-schools-based-on-broadway-alumni-p1.html</a>), which gamely attempts to engineer numbers that, if you wish, could get you started on your “with which do I start?” question. (There’s also an earlier post, also by an engineer: <a href=“Which College prepares you best for Broadway? - #16 by theatrelvr - Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1337495-which-college-prepares-you-best-for-broadway-p2.html</a>).

It is a year later, and my daughter has finished her auditions. She toured 8 schools last fall and ended up falling in love with one that wasnt even on her radar screen. After auditioning in January, she received an email from her favorite school that she was waitlisted for MT, but was welcome to enroll as a theater major. They said she would be notified no later than today, Friday April 3, about her status as a prospective MT student.

Cue unpleasant discordant music

So today is over and NO WORD, either yes or no, from the school! What the heck? This seems very unprofessional (and not a good sign.) Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Fortunately, she has been accepted into MT at another school that she likes very much. And they have offered talent and academic scholarships to her. She is also still waiting to hear from 2 other schools. But she really had her heart set on the school that had her waitlisted. Needless to say, she is very upset at not hearing either yes or no. She will probably call the school on Monday. But this is going to be a long weekend…

Hmph. I am getting too old for this kind of drama…

Ugh, so sorry!! Son had one school that stretched out the “still in contention” process to mid-April. Fortunately for him, he already had two great schools who wanted him and that he would be happy to attend, but I’m sure there were others “still in contention” waiting to hear before making a final decision. Son was eventually rejected, and I think the school only uses the term “wait list” now.

I feel for you D, Saddr. Last year S had one WL at a program he really liked. He did not hear definite answer from (no) until early May.

Yes, similar situation 2 years ago. We were told my daughter would hear about her top choice (waitlisted) school by X date, and we never ended up hearing anything at all.

It is so hard to be on wait lists. I think the most conventional advice is to try to fall in love with one of the for sure choices you have in hand right now. Try not to think about the wait listed schools in your decision making because right now, they are not an option for you. You don’t have to go ahead and accept to a school right now, but make sure you do accept a program by May 1. So really focus on the ones to which you have an actual offer and see which of those schools suits you best. If you happen to come off a wait list, let it be a happy surprise. Not something you should count on or even consider in your decision making right now. I know that’s easier said than done. Good luck to you all!

My D was on a wait list last year - I think if she had been accepted at 1st it would have been a top contender- but by the time it came around to a yes, she had mentally committed already, and was just done with the process, didn’t want to spend more time visiting, evaluating etc, so it never got big consideration from her

My son was on 4 wait lists of sorts last year. He took himself off one, and ended up getting offers from 2 out of remaining 3. But both were after May 1. It’s great that she has an in-hand option that she likes, but you never know. Also I think it’s hard to hold schools at this stage too firmly to dates as they wait for students to accept or deny spots.

Thanks for your replies, everyone. She actually heard on April 5 from them that they want to extend the deadline to mid-April. So the waiting game continues. She only ended up auditioning at 4 schools after visiting 8. So 2 more possibilities are out there in addition to the one acceptance and the one waitlist. I wish she had auditioned at more places. That is the one thing I really wanted her to do!

Hooray!!! Last weekend, my daughter was getting ready to go on stage in a local theater, when her phone rang. It was the musical theater director at her #1 school, inviting her into their MT track!!! Needless to say, she was on cloud nine that night.

All of this delay has really made her appreciate her acceptance. She has been lucky enough to be paid over the years for her performances, and has received complementary reviews in the local papers. I think she thought that of course college MT programs would want her in their programs, duh. So this 2 month delay has given her a much needed dose of humility. No one, however talented, can afford to think it will be easy to audition into MT programs.

This site has been very helpful and reassuring to me. Thank you so much for your encouragement. At some point soon, I would like to contribute more details about my daughter’s audition experience. The main thought that I would like to leave you with is: explore every option, and keep an open mind. Parents, dont be afraid to assert your opinion!

Congratulations @SadderButWiserGal! I’ll be looking for your background post.

Congratulations!!!

Congrats to your D! It’s so nice to have positive closure to a thread that was started over a year ago.

Congrats!! I just came across this thread and got invested so I was so happy to see that you updated us!!
My youngest is a junior in hs and starting her search so it is always helpful to hear everyones different avenues and choices. Would love to know her 4 choices and where she wound up! Best of luck!!!

Thank you for such an inspiring thread! I took a two year gap and auditioned for schools for class of 2019, however for financial reasons can not attend this fall. I will be reauditioning this year and am really nervous.
