I can’t care about Hillabee one way or the other. As I’ve said, I just don’t vote for the wives of mass murderers (and that would be true even if I happened to like 'em). Let her spend herself into oblivion for all I care.

Mini

^ Who is the wife of a mass murderer? Who is this mass murderer? Who did he kill and how did he do it?

More importantly, how did an anti-Clintonite survive in the liberal Northwest? :)

He did it by bombing wastewater treatment plants, and then prohibiting the delivery of simple antibiotics, antidiarrheals, basic medical supplies, and parts to repair the water treatment facilities. A million people died, 500,000 of them children (there is a debate whether all of them were under age 5 - all documented by UNICEF). His future Secretary of State went on national tv and said, “We think it was worth it.” More than 8 times as many children as killed by Idi Amin; about the same as by Pol Pot. Roughly one out of every 4-5 children in that age range - you can figure out for yourself what the U.S. equivalent would be.

He hoped to weaken the population enough that the generals would overthrow Saddam and invite the U.S. in. Didn’t happen. Sponsored two coupe attempts - both failed. Tried to make a deal with Chemical Ali - also failed.

Meanwhile, European leaders prepared to bring a case before the International Court of Justice in the Hague under the U.N. Convention on Genocide, Resolution 261, Article 2, Section C.

“Article II: In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.”

He finally gave up on this strategy, concocted the Big Lie of 1998 which all the “experienced Democrats” swallowed, sponsored the illegal Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, kicked the U.N. weapons inspectors out, and bombed the country with by far the largest and most intense aerial bombing since Viet Nam. Still didn’t work, though.

I don’t necessarily hold this against Hillabee. I have no clue the degree to which she was complicit. But knowing this, voting for her is out of the question. (I think her continued record of poor judgment from 1993 to 2006 is plenty reason to disqualify her, but I don’t need to go that far.)

Oh, and in case you want to know why I care, I spent quite a lot of time in the mid-1990s openly breaking U.S. law by raising funds to send medical supplies and treatment plant parts to Iraq to save at least a few of those children.

Now since I’m not Hillary (and neither are you), I would never presume to know exactly what she meant, what she was thinking, or what her intention was. But I do know that genuine apologies usually do not have qualifications, such as, “if I offended anyone.”

I think when she said it, she was tired of hearing the same old pressure to drop out, and wanted to qualify her answer with examples. Under different circumstances (not being tired and frustrated with an onslaught of the same question over and over again), she would probably have answered differently, perhaps in a way that wouldn’t have invoked the event of an assassination; she could have made the same point without mentioning that specific tragedy.

While I can’t remark on exactly what she meant, or intended, I can speculate on what she didn’t do - and that is to offer an unconditional apology. But, I truly believe she doesn’t see how her words were unfortunate. I see them as unnecessary because (as mentioned in my earlier post) she could suspend her campaign today, and confidentally be assured she’d get the nomination if something were to happen to Obama between now and the convention.

I can agree that she qualified her apology. I personally don’t think she had anything to apologize for, and it was therefore appropiriate to give the “if I offended anyone” version of an apology.

Mini: Thank you for that info. I bet it isn’t on most people’s radar because he was a president beloved by liberals. Since liberals control the mainstream media, we wouldn’t have heard too much about that.

Now that the left is through with the Clintons, we will start to see more truth in the media. Vanity Fair is publishing a slam piece on Bill, now that they are behind Obama.

I still think that calling Clinton a “mass murderer” is inappropriate.

Mini, I’m sure you know that a great many people have questioned those numbers, and that UNICEF itself sent out a corrective press release in November 2001. Here’s an excerpt from one article on the subject, by someone who’s not exactly a “wingnut,” from back in 2002. A possible 100,000 or more “excess deaths” during the years after the Gulf War are bad enough, and far too many. But there’s no possible way to know how many of those were actually attributable to the sanctions, or how events would have changed (and how many deaths would have resulted) had there been no sanctions at all.

More to the immediate point, I agree that your hyperbolic, overheated rhetoric claiming that whatever the number, it makes President Clinton a “mass murderer,” is inappropriate. To put it kindly. I know you probably don’t think what people intend makes the slightest bit of difference (except when you accuse Israel of intending to destroy the Palestinian people, of course), but in my mind, “murder” requires both intent and premeditation.

Under your theory, I suppose the UN, and all the other countries besides that US that supported the sanctions, were led by mass murderers as well? And how about Saddam Hussein, for his invasion of Kuwait that proximately resulted in the sanctions?

Also, why do you even mention Pol Pot? I’m sure you’re a big Noam Chomsky fan, and he accused the West of practically making up that particular genocide! (Because, of course, Pol Pot was a putatively left-wing mass murderer.)

<-----------salutes DonnaL

Spideygirl, DonnaL, one thing you learn if you hang around the Parents Cafe at CC for any length of time: Never, ever respond to a Mini post which references “mass murderer” Clinton, Madeline Albright, etc. We all know what he’s talking about, we’ve all formed our opinions about it, and we all know he’s going to repeat the same thing, over and over, until another newby bites. It’s best to just look the other way and hum. Think of England. Anything. But don’t respond. There’s no point.

“Think of England”

Haha. I love it.

Kluge: LOL!!!
