Listen, if they weren’t very interested then they wouldn’t want to bring HR in. Be yourself. You may want to practice by doing the bid about “walk me through your resume” by recording yourself or do it in front of a mirror. I usually do a mock interview with my daughter.

We are all keeping our fingers crossed for you.

I have a suit/shoes/tie, but it’s all a little too big for me (the suit) and not exactly “dazzling,” especially the shoes, which are a bit worn and old. I just don’t have the money to blow on fancy shoes at the moment. Do they seriously notice this sort of thing and count it against you?

The shoes don’t have to be fancy or expensive but they should not be “worn.” A pair of Oxford should be fine. Florsheim, Bostonian, and Hush Puppies seem to make some acceptable shoes for under $100. Check out Zappos.

I’d find another pair of shoes. I don’t know that those would count against you - but they don’t leave a positive first impression.

Do you have a roommate of friend you could borrow from? Or perhaps, assuming money is an issue, is there a thrift store/goodwill nearby where you could purchase a pair for probably less than $10?

I might be able to – I’m a pretty tall guy though. I have a few friends living near where I am flying to, but I doubt they’d have anything that’d fit. I could probably find some stores, though.

check out zappos or something for shoes on sale-- they don’t have to be expensive but those shoes are pretty worn and not that fancy to begin with. I would also try DSW or some other discount shoe store, and you should be able to find something there for <$50

It’s better to buy new shoes but if you don’t have money, take your shoes to a local shoe repairer and ask them to get a deep clean, which should be about $6-10, probably cheaper than buying a new pair of shoes.

if this would boost your confidence…remember they are looking for a reason to hire you. You know they already are impressed with you or they wouldn’t be flying you out. Be what they expect to see.

Also, google the company if you haven’t already done so…what recent articles about them/what do ratings agencies say about them/what ads are they running in what media (good for conversation)

First of all, congrats on landing the interviews! It is the hardest part of getting a job Now comes the easiest one - you just have to knock 'em dead. Seriously, they would not be flying you out and spending their precious time talking to you if they wern’t interested in hiring you. Your job is to reassure them that they are about to make the right decision. You’ve been given some very good advice on this thread.

I second everyone who said that those shoes are not acceptable for someone interviewing for a financial position (if cleaned and polished, they’d be OK for someone interviewing for a lab tech position or a postdoc :)). You need new-looking, shiny shoes, not neccesarily a $200 pair of shoes. DSW is a good suggestion. Macy’s is known for having clearance sales this time of the year, and I bet you can find a pair of new shiny Bostonians for $50 or so! Your belt has to match your shoes, your socks have to match your shoes. Make sure that your suit and shirt are ironed and clean and do not have any odor (cologne, cigarettes, wet dog - all are equally bad!) or stains. And get a haircut. You do not have to look like a Hugo Boss model, but you have to look neat and put together.

I don’t have enough time to order online because my interview is right around the corner – I’ll have to find a place in NYC to nab some before the interview begins. I assume Zappos and DSW have stores all over the place.

Zappos is an online store, they do ship overnight but that probably won’t work for you.

NYC probably have a lot of shoe stores. It may save you time if you can figure out the styles you want and call ahead to make sure they have the styles you want in your size.

legendofmax - I am in NYC. When will you be in? I have been following your “saga.” If you want to come by where I work, I will buy you a pair of shoes. Many good things (knock on wood) have happened to me lately. My kids are blessed that they do not need to worry about this sort of things. I am serious about this. PM me if you like to take me up on it. Someday maybe you could buy someone else a pair of shoes.

Oldfort:
That is sooo kind of you. Yay for the CC community!
Legendofmax: Take it up! One day, you will be able to do the same for another student.

Max : I urge you to take up oldfort’s kind offer. If that makes you uncomfortable you can always take it as a loan.
Hopefully it would make a little bit of difference in your chances. :)
