The shuttle is great and easier to reserve. I wouldn’t bother with the hassle of trying to reserve parking.
Will suggest that. May put this task on them.
@jym626, let us know how things work out.
Looking up stuff for you prompted me to check out availability at the place we’ve stayed a couple of times in Kauai. It’s not available for next Feb during our preferred time :(.
We gotta decide soon if we are going next year or not.
Wow, booked out that far??!
I hope to talk to the kids this weekend and confirm that they are ok with what I picked. I am still holding the resort room but I will get hit with a cancellation fee if I let this other one go
Another question - how busy is that road along the s coast in the summer?
To those considering Kauai around Labor Day weekend. Kauai Marathon usually happens that weekend. The race starts in Poipu and finishes there. Some roads will be closed for the race.
Last time we were in Kauai they were doing road construction, and it we missed the turn into someplace we were trying to go, they warned us ahead of time it would add 30 minutes to our trip.
When was that?
2022
Just checking in to see if decision has been made.
You’re planning for this summer, right?
Thanks for checking in! I am still waiting to hear what they want to do. I feel really badly holding the reservations so will maybe nudge them this weekend.
I’m late to this thread but I just got back from a week on Kauai. This time we stayed in Poipu, last time in Princeville. We plan our trips for when it’s cold in Chicago…usually February.
Poipu had/usually has better weather that time of year…in other words less rain. Fyi, a local recommended the Windy app for local weather. The drive time from Poipu to the north side of the island Princeville/Hanalei is at least an hour. We stayed at a property on Lawai Rd managed by Parrish. (The times we’ve used Parrish, we’ve been happy, but we were looking high end location with a washer/dryer.) We also don’t have children traveling with us…just our young adult kids in their 20s and their significant others. I don’t snorkel but the kids do. They snorkeled twice…Poipu beach and a reef on the Napali coast.
We chose Poipu for the weather, its “newness” to us and its proximity to Waimea Canyon. We had 3 “excursion days”…1. Waimea Canyon with a stop at the Kauai Coffee Plantation. 2. Kapaa with a booked kayak/hike to Secret Falls (Kayak Wailua https://kayakwailua.com/ ) and 3. Hanalei for a Napali boat/snorkeling tour https://www.napalicatamaran.com/ ). The last minute helicopter tour out of Lihue my DH and DS’s gf had booked was cancelled due to the low cloud ceiling.
There was some road construction but it didn’t really affect us much. The time zone difference worked in our favor so early (and in the case of the Napali boat tour, very early) morning starts weren’t a problem and traffic was pretty non-existent. (Note: the speed limits are pretty low so no real highway driving imo.)
As for Maui we’ve been going there for a couple of weeks at a time for years. Due to our interest in golf/tennis/pickle ball/hikes we have been staying in Kapalua. It’s definitely windier and cooler but we had a lovely routine there. We pivoted this year, due to the Lahaina fire, to the Big Island. We were there for 3 weeks and are planning on going there again next year.
Every island is different and it really depends on what you want to do. Love them all for different reasons.
Thanks. We are going more upscale for convenience and such. One unit I looked at was managed by Parrish, who advertises themselves as a concierge service. I asked them if the unit had a crib or pack 'n play, and their response was that they have a relationship with several companies on the island that they would refer us to so we could rent one. Apologies, but that doesn’t sound concierge to me. The ones I am holding (and awaiting a decision) have cribs available…
I’ve never requested a crib. We’ve been happy with them, but obviously they aren’t meeting your needs.
We’ve used them at another location and didn’t have any issues/problems. In fact DH was pleasantly surprised when we booked the Kauai place and they gave us a discounted rate due to being a repeat customer. We appreciated how the residence was stocked and they worked with us on our early arrival and late departure.
Different folks have different needs and expectations. It’s good that you asked about the crib. I mentioned Parrish because we were happy and saw multiple homes with a small Parrish sign out front.
Oh I am sure they are great under most circumstances. I looked as several they managed. But this is a priority for us as its much easier than bringing a pack n play on the plane, so it was a no for us.
Possible we’ve stayed at the same house! Previously been at two different Parrish houses on Lawai road over the years; just got back from two weeks at Kiahuna as we were a smaller bunch this year. ![]()
Aloha! It was Nanea. It had stunning views…felt like “lifestyles of the rich and famous”! (Didn’t post a link because I wasn’t sure it was allowed.)
I know that one! It’s a great area, we’ve also stayed at Hale Ilikai which is just 3-4 doors down from it. We stayed at Parrish’s Baby Beach house for several years through 2020 (Hale Luana) but it was sold some time after 2020 and the price doubled for the weeks that we’re there so we moved on.
Poipu is great in the winter months, we’ve known too many folks who’ve had flooding rain (and floods) when up in Princeville at the same time, even though it’s just an hour away. And Kauai is just low key, and wonderful for multigenerational vacations.
Well circling back with the final decision for lodging. We actually had another option thrown into the mix as friends have a timeshare there and we were able to also find a 2 br unit at the Marriott Waiohai Beach club which is right on the beach but looks a bit dated and our kids felt that the resources available at the Koloa landing were best, so we are cancelling the beautiful condo right on the water and the Sheraton. I loved that condo but we gave them the choice, and so it goes. But all the choices were good, so no complaints.
Arrived yesterday afternoon. The resort option with the 2 yo was 1000% the right decision.
