The 3rd dress is a more sophisticated look for a family black tie wedding in CT. The first dress is lovely, but nothing special, very, very young looking.

I’m old-fashioned about this; I don’t wear black to a wedding unless I’m trying to make a point. A navy cocktail dress is just as versatile, so I’d go with that.

She should plan to have a wrap or something if she wears sleeveless. It could be very cold in NY in March. There could be two feet of snow on the ground. She doesn’t have to wear her shoulder covering all evening, but it will be nice to have if she gets chilled.

Black tie is supposed to be tuxedo, but in point of fact a dark business suit is acceptable. What are they oing to do, kick you out? It’s kind of an over zealous request!

A short black dress is appropriate. I am not so crazy about any of the dresses shown in these links in particular. The first dress I thought also was a little young looking. There will be lots of dresses for sale within the next few weeks so she might be able to get a more expensive and better designed dress on sale

A dark suit at a black tie event in Seattle or San Francisco - certainly! NYC can be more formal. I think it is a good idea for a young man to get a nice dark suit and tailor it so it looks good. It does not have to be super expensive. The suit will be handy for many functions that might come up: job interviews, weddings, funerals.

I am not sure that a 21 yr old should try to look older by selecting a more “mature” looking dress, but I agree that she can do better when it comes to finding a nice lbd. In just 3 days there should be plenty more party dresses on sale :)
