Another Christmas gift thread - ideas for 22-year-old son

@Midwest67 - that phone thingie will make a great stocking stuffer!

A life-straw and emergency pack for hiking, waterproof matches, a flint, foil blanket, flashlight and whistle and compass.

Smartwool?

@Hoggirl - My husband collects socks (!) and he hikes. He said Costco has good Merino wool socks.

‘Smartwool’ is good but can be overpriced if you don’t find them on sale.

Alvada 80% Merino wool socks on Amazon are good for winter hikes and a very good value.

Consider a proper hat for hiking with a deep brim. Ball caps which are popular don’t provide enough shade.

There are some terrific suggestions. I might use some for my family.

Another great brand of hiking socks is Darn Tough. They are really comfortable. They cost about the same as Smartwool. If you are looking for some that cost a little less, REI merino wool socks are pretty nice, too.

We really like Farm to Feet socks for hiking and winter tennis.

If the person can’t tolerate wool, I’ve really liked Thorlo socks. They sometimes go on sale—buy some and get one free.

Just bought S “Wingspan,” which is a board game that is gorgeous and has lots of info about many different boards, if that counts as reading. It happened to be at my Barnes & Noble but it is a “hot” game so may be difficult to acquire at their $55 price.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Our ds has a lot of hiking gear from his Scouting days (Eagle), but I knew socks would be something that would need to be replaced.

A hat is a great idea, but I doubt he would wear it - eye roll.

Since he has now expressed an interest in a couple of sweaters, adding those into the mix will take care of my gift purchases for him!

Want - hiking day pack
Need- new wool hiking socks
Wear - sweaters he has requested
Read - hiking book of day hikes near where he lives

I get the phone leash and a few other small things for the stocking.
Yay!

Thanks, again!

I love the gossamergear accessories and have the shoulder pocket, as well as a phone lanyard.

Another favorite is a lighted beanie hat. https://www.amazon.com/POWERCAP-Ultra-Bright-Lighted-Battery-Headlamp/dp/B00HBW9ET8/ref=asc_df_B00HBW9ET8/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309843523169&hvpos=1o3&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17645248484768767610&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1016310&hvtargid=pla-466674511375&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=60676482854&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=309843523169&hvpos=1o3&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17645248484768767610&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1016310&hvtargid=pla-466674511375

We’ve liked Darn Tough and Smartwool for hiking, D also has one pair of Smartwool ski socks that have worked pretty well for her. They’re pricey but if you look for sales, you can find it for half-price (still not cheap) at REI and Amazon. I don’t know how others feel about this, but I find it hard to justify paying $25 or so for one pair of socks.

And if you’re looking for quarter-zip style sweaters, I just got an email from e-bags about some discontinued colors for the Patagonia Better Sweater for men at a great price. S has it on his list and the 3 available colors were actually quite nice.

ETA: PM if anyone wants a coupon code for e-bags.
