another look at some of the dangers of "healthy" food fads

“Although experts estimate that only 1 percent of Americans - about 3 million people - actually suffer from celiac disease, 18 percent of adults now buy gluten-free foods.”

http://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-who-found-evidence-for-gluten-sensitivity-have-now-shown-it-doesn-t-exist

yeah I guess it is hard for folks who think by doing the “right” thing they can control their outcome…avoid heart attacks, diabetes etc… to challenge the control they think they have…it simply is not true. we all want to control our destiny but we can not just by exercising and eating “healthy” what ever that means. yes if you have a genetic heart valve defect get it fixed or have an infection take antibiotics but the rest is silly. Galileo and Columbus were both laughed at. come back in 25 years and let’s see where we are at. stop and really think why you believe the things you do about diet and exercise and how you know it to be true. also I will skip any books written by jimmy carter, I would prefer to get my health info from penn and teller.

Now you’re being silly. We aren’t helpless creatures with no ability to impact our own lives and health…

We’re all going to die of something, but WHEN and how we die CAN be tweaked by interventions we take.

As someone who just spent a few years of her life obtaining a graduate degree in Health Behavior and Health Education, where our entire purpose is to help people understand how to lead healthier lives through education, this thread hurts on so many levels.

On the bright side- my fellow MPHs who graduated with me will (hopefully) never be without a job. Too many people who think things like diabetes and heart attacks can’t (sometimes, certainly not always) be avoided.

I will promise with great certainty that the cholesterol myth and the statins will be gone in the next decade. to many have invested to much in the cholesterol myth for it to evaporate as quickly as it should. nobody has to agree with me but, I feel very strongly that I am correct.

Diabetes type 2 can be avoided. My BIL had type 2 diabetes, he was a vegetarian, but because it was so boring he ate mostly fries with catch up and lots of cake. Guess what, doctor told him to add protein to his diet and he did turkey meat and eventually he didn’t have to take medicine to control diabetes.

@dietz199, I don’t know what was served the next day but I was very much worried about her colon. I mean if I eat food like that I would have problem.

So you believe the obesity epidemic is the result of people getting a raw deal in the genetic lottery, and they should just keep doing what they are doing, because their fate is sealed? That’s an interesting bandwagon you’ve jumped on.

blankmind, do you actually believe there is an obesity epidemic. yes, I know it is said over and over and over…but is it true? do you know the BMI is just made up and has no science to it. and people who are 20lbs “overweight” are healthier and more likely to survive a major medical issue. the average life expectancy is going up and up and up. I do not think we have an epidemic in this country when it comes to people being over weight. stop and think about it. just because the media says it again and again and again, people high up in the power privilege structure (michelle obama) and schools etc …push it does not make it true. you do not have to agree with me, but have you really stopped and thought about it? if yes and you think it is true that is fine but, that is not something I think passes the smell test.

there are some people who are morbidly obese and that is because of their genetics, nobody gets to be 800lbs just by having lack of discipline and there are some people who can eat 5 tacos and 5 chocolate shakes a day and are super skinny (that is genetics too) most people fall someplace else along the bell curve. and most people need not worry about their weight, despite what we hear again and again and again.

Wow.

So let’s take the words “the obesity epidemic” out of what I said. Let’s say instead, “overweight people”. You believe that overweight people should just accept the raw deal fate has chosen for them, because they really have no control over their fate?

As to the gluten thing: DD had debilitating headaches–roll up in a ball in the fetal position for days at a time if I’d let her, and always had a stomach ache. Her skin was a mess, her periods awful, her head was “loud” she couldn’t concentrate. Took her to a neurologist, had an MRI, nothing found. She went off gluten on the advice of a friend’s parent with similar symptoms and with my assistance. All resolved and she lost 12 pounds from her formerly size 8 frame.

I was the very last person who thought it would make a difference.

We don’t buy many gluten free things, just pasta and cereal bars. We just plan with things that are naturally occurring and naturally g-free. It works for her.

blankmind…what is overweight? somebody you think is overweight? somebody who the bogus BMI says is overweight? or the person themselves looks in the mirror and is not happy with their body image? who decides?

I am 5’7" and weigh 140 pounds. I eat a healthy breakfast everyday and do weight bearing exercise daily including running about 8-10 miles a week. I also enjoy small snacks daily in addition to my meals. I like dessert.

So, if my fate is already determined genetically, I can just toss all that exercise and reasonable eating out the window and start eating donuts every morning (yes!!!), potato chips at every lunch and ice cream every night because 140 pounds is my “genetic” happy place and it won’t really change???

I’m going to pop some popcorn. Anyone want to join me on the couch? Wow.

the info is their for those who want to look. laugh at me or whatever, I know how galieo and columbus felt.

I’ll use whatever determinant you choose. Let’s pick an imaginary person that you and I both agree is overweight. You believe that this person has no control over their weight?

You rarely see something so blatantly false, even here on CC. Obesity is rampant.

BTW, it’s NOT genetics. It’s intake vs activity.

Scoot over Sabaray!
