Am visiting my father who lives in HI (Oahu) and he has already gone to bed. I guess that means that I shouldn’t worry either…

There are sirens going off every hour. Please look at the yellow section in the front of the HawaiianTel phone book to see if your dad lives in the evacuation zone and prepare accordingly. Failing that, you can look up the site on-line to find out whether you & dad need to evacuate. It’s best to evacuate well before the waves are supposed to hit around 3am & beyond for hours.

HImom and ellemenope~
Reading your posts, and wanting to let you know we are all thinking of you and your families safety. Hopefully the waves will dissipate long before they reach the Hawaiian shores.
Take care.
-APOL, and my guess your whole CC Family

Devastating pictures! Please stay safe!

According to CNN, the folks in Japan really had little warning.

Is that correct that in about 2hrs. from now HI will get hit (7am CST)?

HImom and Ellenmenope - I am thinking of you and your neighbors and hoping you are not affected by the tsunami. Hopefully all the Hawaiian islands will be spared. Keep us posted if you can.

HImom, I thought of you as soon as I turned on the news this morning and heard about everything that is happening. I hope that you and your family, as well as ellemenope and her father, are in a safe place. Wishing safety for everyone in the path of possible destruction.

Stay safe, HImom & ellenmenope. Please check back when you have internet to let us know you are OK.

Heard from my son in Tokyo this AM. Sounds very scary. There’s no transportation, people walking everywhere. Communication is spotty. My thoughts are with the people of Japan and everyone in the path of the tsunami.

Wow, I just woke up and there were tsunami warnings on my phone. HImom & ellemenope, I hope you’re ok. From the news here, it sounds like the tsunami is hitting you guys right now.

Yikes, all these the big earthquakes are kind of nerve racking. I think I’ll go restock my earthquake stuff today.

Our state has been spared. We drove up the street & slept in our cars last night. We are a short way from hearing the “all clear” that we can all return to our homes. S anticipated that we can all come home, so we have gone back to our home anticipating that we will be told we can return.

We are very fortunate, which we do realize. Mostly, folks have stayed calm and safe. Folks have prepared and reacted properly.

Our thoughts and prayers to our many friends in Japan. There are a lot of folks in our state with very close ties to loved ones and family in Japan.

Stunning film of the tsunami in Japan this morning.

Glad to hear that you are safe HiMom.

Secondspring–keep us posted on your son. We would be fascinated to hear about his experiences. AND TELL HIM TO KEEP SAFE.

HIMom, what an ordeal! I’m so glad that HI is safe, and no lives were lost here. I hope that my Japanese friends hear from their relatives that they are OK, too. The pictures of the coast off Japan are terrifying…

There should not be any significant tsunamis hitting WA/OR coast. We just “celebrated” 10th anniversary of *The Almost Big One *here in Seattle (Feb 28), and I went through my pantry and made sure that our emergency suplies were in good shape…

I’m having a difficult time believing that the earthquake activity over the past year or so is not more than usual. Then again, I know almost nothing about geology. I think we had an entire thread devoted to earthquakes at one time, right?

Received an email from a friend in Japan this morning in that he and his family were safe and that they didn’t think that the tsunamis would affect them but they could easily move to higher ground if they needed to. We have an audio chat scheduled for tonight so maybe he will provide more details from his perspective of what is happening there. Things are probably not too bad for him as he still has internet service but I’m sure that there will be all sorts of recovery issues for the whole country, even for those in unaffected areas.

HIMom, I thought about you when I heard about the tsunami warning early this AM. I’m so glad you are ok! I’m always envious of you living in Hawaii, but this morning I wasn’t quite so jealous :-).

Yes, we did have a prior thread on earthquakes & tsunamis. Some of the waves DID go 100 feet inland on the Big Island and hit a sensor at an elevation of 11 feet that was that far inland.

H did call in to his employer and he DOES have to work, tho many others have been told to stay home & much has been canceled. We had several events scheduled and am not sure whether they are on or off at this point. One was canceled because the building we were holding it at is closed. Not sure what will happen with the event we were going to this afternoon.

Some flooding is continuing on Maui and Hilo. Still awaiting word and evaluations.

HImom - glad to hear you all are relatively unscathed.

Question for you, though. Some of these ‘aftershocks’ have been serious earthquakes within themselves. How can they reassure people that these aftershocks will not create more tsunamis?

We’re still waiting for the all-clear, so have not addressed the issue of potential aftershocks. I think there is so much relief that the tsunami was so mild that HI people aren’t going to be too concerned about aftershocks, whether that makes sense or not.

We got a phone call this morning advising to stay away from beaches, here in California.

I am sure it’s just a precaution.

Hoping that the loss of life in Japan stays low, considering such a big quake. What a tragedy.

Some damage in Santa Cruz right now, “just” a dock, boats in a marina so far
