Another wisdom teeth question

I had a dental panoramic x-ray last month in eastern Europe, with hardcopy and CD for me and e-mailed to dentist, for 10 euros ($14).

Go to a dentist in NY and let me know how much they charge you for a panoramic xray.

nysmile.

Thanks for your response. Yes, we do have insurance through our employer. Your situation is why I would like health care reform enacted that would allow the small business owners and self-employed to join a pool.

S had his out (all impacted, lower two lying horizontally–they had to be ‘broken’ to be removed) 2+ weeks ago. Panoramic xrays in advance cost $350. Cost of extraction: $600 per tooth, plus $400 for anesthesia (about three grand total). Because the teeth were impacted, it was considered medical, and the entire cost (we believe, since no bill has yet arrived) was covered by both medical and dental insurance.

Warning about anesthesia though. Two and a half weeks out and S is still having some weird physical reactions that we think are related to the anesthesia. The oral surgeon swears they are not related, but they popped up directly after the surgery, so we disagree. It is worth knowing exactly what types of drugs they put in the sedation anyway.

Just wanted to provide an update on D’s consultation.

One of the tops is in no way ready to come down, and the oral surgeon said it is so high up, it may never need to be removed if it causes her no problems or doesn’t come down any further. The other top tooth has come down more than the other, but can still wait another year.

However, the one tooth that is still way up there also has a small cyst on it - the surgeon is not worried about any malignancy or anything, but she said she has seen situations where a growing cyst can cause the tooth to move up more toward the sinus, which of course we don’t want. So she was going to request the last x-rays from the previous oral surgeon two years ago, and compare them to see what might be going on with the tooth that is way up there.

Also, she doesn’t do conscious sedation, and only does nitrous oxide, with IV valium, so when the time comes, we’re not even sure if we can go back to her. D will have to decide whether she can handle the procedure with just nitrous oxide and valium (I most definitely think she can, and now I have at least another year to convince her so). Anyway, the oral surgeon laughed and said, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone who is so happy to hear they don’t have to have their wisdom teeth out at this time.”

She told me that most oral surgeons in our area, when using conscious sedation, use propofol… and I replied… oh, the Michael Jackson drug. I have to say given her bad reaction to the propofol the first time around, I’d feel much more comfortable if she’d go the nitrous oxide/IV valium route and just avoid the whole conscious sedation thing. She also said the top teeth usually come out much easier and cause less problems than the bottoms do, so at least we can be pretty much assured that she’s already had the worst of the procedures done.

S2 just had his wisdom tooth out last Monday…yes, x-rays confirm he only has one…DH has zero wis. teeth and S2 is his clone:)

S2’s wis. tooth had come in straight and was not bothering him. He went to get his teeth cleaned 2 weeks ago and the dentist said it should come out just to keep it fr. bothering him later in life.

Having it done at the dentists office was much cheaper than an oral surgeon (S1 had all 4 of his done by o.s. because some were impacted.). I paid $85 for S2. That was the after insurance cost.

They did panoramic x-rays of S2 and gave him three shots to numb his mouth. S2 said the anesthestic injected into the roof of his mouth was pretty bad.

He did fine, drove himself there and back home. He sat around w. the gauze in his mouth for a couple of hours then got a text that his friend had just bought Madden 2010 for PS3, so off he went with a pocket full of gauze. I was amazed at how well he did.

He drove 4 hours back to college the next day the next day.
