OP I hope everything goes well and you get back on your feet quickly. Be careful and take it easy.
My W should be the one posting here as she has had megga experience with this. You probably dont want to hear this but she has had her wisdom teeth removed 3 times now. The dentists could not believe it that they grew back in twice. Our D has hers removed about 5 years ago and just went for her yearly check up to be told that it looks like she inherited her mothers teeth. The Dr says it appears that 2 of them are coming back. Needless to say my D is not pleased and said that of all the things to inherit did it have to be her stubborn teeth.
Good Luck

Its now been 5 days since D had hers out(three), last night I took her to a movie. She is still sleeping a lot, but considering she is on spring break that is not unusual!

Weird question though, the next day after her surgery she woke up with a black eye. Not a huge one, but bruising underneath one eye. ( also had slight amount of bruising along her cheek)

Don’t remember that happening with her sister.

Wisdom teeth do not grow back in! Anyone who has more than they think they should, does. I had 5 of them.

You are born with the number of “teeth buds” that you will have, all your life. Some people are born with fewer then normal (my brother was) – and some with more. If you have more than 4 wisdom teeth, no matter when they turn up, you were born with “extra” teeth buds.

I got black eyes when my wisdom teeth were removed, too.

OP, don’t forget there is canned fruit, like cling peaches. You can chill them in the fridge & they do feel good going down.

Why is this such an issue still if they have to sew it shut anyway?
From what I understand the granulating tissue is prone to getting things stuck in it.
Think about it- you don’t form a scab in your mouth to protect the healing tissue. :(

D is sad about no popcorn too.

OP hope you are feeling better soon, but don’t try and rush back to work. Give yourself the time you need to heal! Maybe you can alternate ice and heat and see if that works???

I’ve been taking in all the good suggestions. DS2 is having surgery on Friday. They have to expose a tooth, but have to do it through the palate rather than the easier gum side. So I’m taking mental notes on foods to have on hand.

Has anyone suggested one of the drinks like Boost to get more protein and such? I don’t know if they are dairy based, though.

Don’t feel bad about the no-popcorn—in a couple of months it will be fine to have it again!

Frustrated. D went to the oral surgeon yesterday to be rechecked before she went back to school.Apparently wasn’t clear on how long it will take to heal. D texted me last night at 11pm saying her mouth really hurts & that she thinks she has dry socket. It sounds like she ate things she shouldn’t have & that she thought it would be ok if she rinsed her mouth after.

She still has lots of pain meds left so she was able to get to sleep & she is going to call me after class.

But I am so frustrated & worried. She doesn’t have a car, so going to an oral surgeon in her college town daily to have her dressing repacked will be very difficult & expensive.
Crossing fingers it is ok cause she swears she just cleaned it the way they told her too.

But let it be a warning to all popcorn lovers! Not worth it! (she didn’t eat popcorn, but seeds of some type)

I actually left my surgeon’s office in a snit because I thought they hadn’t given me any instructions for aftercare, but apparently they had and I just have no memory of it because of the anesthesia. Thankfully my boyfriend was paying attention. >.<

Today is supposed to be the turning point for me in my healing supposedly, having had them out Saturday. I feel very good right now, some mild pain and still some trouble chewing but nothing more than an annoyance, but I’m taking motrin 800 and vicodin concurrently… the pain this morning was worse but more focused on my incisions and not my entire face, so I’d like to think that’s a good sign. I am going to work tomorrow barring some kind of catastrophe so hopefully it’ll go well.

When are we supposed to be out of the woods for developing dry socket? I have a check up on Saturday and was under the impression that I’d be able to resume my workout routine and at least a semi-normal diet after that, but I really have no idea. Am lamenting that the ice cream in the freezer has almonds in it and should probably be off limits. I am terrified of developing dry socket, I have to be well enough to be unmedicated so I can drive and my only option for getting dressings changed would be to go on my lunch hour at work… I feel like I could end up losing my job if I were to get dry socket, I don’t know how I’d manage the logistics. I’m probably overreacting but I’ve been very worried about that. The pain was awful yesterday and this morning, and though they said to expect that I am still afraid of dry socket. Will be continuing to eat nothing but mashed potatoes, soup, apple sauce, and homemade waffles. :(

ETA: Made the mistake of logging into my work stuff to check my email and see if I was missing anything important today, and my performance review is TOMORROW!!! D: I am sure they’ll reschedule if I can’t be there but it is going to be rough having that my first day back, it’s only been the weekend plus two days but I feel like I’ve been away from the office for six months already. o.O Maybe they’ll be nicer to me if I look like a chipmunk still. :)

I hope you feel better tomorrow and that your performance review goes well.

My review went well, and I got a small raise. They had nothing negative to say, which was a nice boost after the week I’ve been having! I have been completely useless the last two days and am looking forward to feeling significantly better sometime in the near future. Yesterday was awful and I can’t take the vicodin anymore because it’s rotting my stomach even with food, this morning was terrible and I couldn’t take anything stronger than advil but it got a lot better as the day progressed-- it doesn’t really hurt now at all. I taste blood in my mouth constantly now that I am up and moving around but I don’t ever see any, so I hope that’s okay. Really looking forward to my check up on Saturday to make sure everything is as it should be, I thought I’d be feeling a lot better by now :

Thinking about my food choices the last few days, I seriously overlooked FIBER and am paying for it-- as someone with IBS I don’t know how I didn’t think of that, especially with the meds I’ve been taking. I am pretty much living off of instant mashed potatoes now because I am too wiped out when I get home from work to deal with anything else and boyfriend is getting tired of doing everything, and I don’t blame him, I’ve been useless since Saturday. I thought I’d be able to eat more food by now… it doesn’t hurt my teeth to chew but the wounds feel raw after I eat and they swell up and throb, pretty much no matter what I eat. I don’t know what to make of it. If I haven’t just eaten, they look like they’re healing nicely and don’t look infected.

I am usually REALLY good about pain and exhaustion but I am just NOT running at 100% yet and it feels like everyone is expecting me to buck up and get over it by now… not sure why I’m struggling so much to do that. I am so tired I can’t stand it and I’m not even on the meds anymore.

Congrats on your review and raise!

It took me the better part of two weeks to feel back to normal. Just rest as much as you can and take it easy.

Thanks, I was relieved about the review. The raise was much bigger than I was expecting so that was a really nice way to come back to work.

I had my check up today and it was thoroughly frustrating. I’d scheduled an appointment with an actual doctor, but only ended up seeing a nurse who merely made faces when I mentioned the incessant bleeding, and then YELLED at me because she says I’m not brushing the incisions well enough… I didn’t even know I was supposed to do that?! It doesn’t say that on my sheet or on any websites I can find, everything specifically says NOT to brush over the surgical sites. I’ve just been brushing my teeth like normal and doing the salt water rinse like the surgeon said to, and it looks plenty clean to me. She had me so flustered I completely forgot to ask whether or not it’s safe for me to resume my workouts or if the bleeding is a serious problem… I can’t lay down or else my gums throb and it starts bleeding. It’s only trace amounts of blood but I didn’t think that was supposed to be happening a week later. And my sheet says not to resume strenuous physical activity until cleared by the surgeon, but a surgeon didn’t even examine me, and the nurse didn’t say anything about it.

So now I guess I have to call on Monday and hope I can get a doctor on the phone and not another cranky nurse. :(

It does seem that you are having a worse recovery than normal.

Some information exists indicating that timing surgery relative to a woman’s monthly cycle can make a difference in healing and complications:

[AGD - Advocacy - Resources - Oral Health Resources](http://www.agd.org/public/oralhealth/Default.asp?IssID=340&Topic=W&ArtID=1365#body)
[Wisdom Tooth Extraction (Removal): Recovery, Pain, and More](Wisdom Teeth Removal (Extraction): What to Expect, Recovery & Pain)

That’s interesting. I had my surgery on the very last day of my cycle, so I would think that means I shouldn’t be at an increased risk for complications if that information is true, though that means my recovery was all during the very beginning of the next one.

The nurse was too busy scolding me to answer any of my questions or be particularly clear about what she was saying, but it sounded like she was saying that my gums are swollen because I’m not brushing the incisions (just my teeth-- yes, including those neighboring the surgical sites), and that I need to start brushing them now. She said they will bleed the first couple times, but then my gums will “harden” and go back to normal. It does NOT say anything about this on my aftercare sheet or on anything I’ve been able to find anywhere online. I am afraid to do it, I am terrified of getting dry socket. I ALSO wanted to ask at what point I was in the clear about developing that, and didn’t get the chance. The pain today was REALLY good, I am on no pain meds at all now, not even advil, except I do take an advil before I eat a meal because eating seems to induce a little swelling that hurts-- otherwise there’s no pain. But still the bloody ooze!

jello, fruit smoothies.
