Answering questions about Loomis

hi! I did advanced precalc last year. the difference betwen the two isnt huge but it’s enough if you really care about stem. precalc/calc feeds into calc BC and precalc A only feeds into calc ab. but if u have a good enoygh grade u can def do BC with precalc A as well.

as for science, advanced bio is rlly good! is your DD/DS an incoming sophomore?

Hey everyone! Just reviving this old topic, but I had my tour and interview at Loomis today (50 min interview- is that okay?) and I really loved the campus; everything seemed to match what I was looking for! Just some questions: around how many people does LC accept each year? I’m very nervous as I’ve heard it’s selective. What does SNUG stand for??? I saw in the pamphlet to ask a student but I couldn’t get up the courage to. Finally, are there any cons to Loomis? During my tour I was absolutely starstruck by the facilities and programs, but it can’t all be perfect and matching my (and probably a lot of other people’s) needs, right? It seems too good to be true.

How many do they accept? I’m not sure they’ve published that recently, though the admit rate is now below twenty percent (17-18%, as I recall), and the enrolled freshman class tends to be in the range of 160 students. Are you applying as a day student or a boarder? The day student admit rate is said to be lower than the average, given efforts to maintain a 70:30 boarder/day student ratio.

SNUG is an acronym for “students nestled underground” because the original student lounge was in the basement of Loomis Hall. Today, Loomis Hall is part of the Scanlan Campus Center, and the SNUG is above ground, in what was the original dining hall space.

It truly is a wonderful school. No use worrying about things you can’t control, like admit rates, though. Just put your best foot forward, and if you’re intent on going to an independent school next year, make sure you apply to some additional options.

Good luck!

Thank you! I’m applying as a boarder. After the interview, I typed up a thank you email, but the next day I checked my drafts and found that I didn’t click send (I hastily sent it that minute)! I know it’s better to send the thank you email the day of, will this be detrimental to how my interviewer views me?

they dont write the report until the day after so you’re fine LMAO if it helps when I interviewed for loomis iI was literally an hour late to my interview

Really? How long did your interview last? Do tours get scored, like demonstrated interest or something? Other than me being introverted and being shy, my tour was really nice, I shared a lot of common ground with my guides. Newspaper, book writing, debate, poetry, etc. I think they had lots of stuff in common with you too! This leads me to wonder if Loomis primarily humanities based, is it?? I love writing and all but I also appreciate a good STEM program, does Loomis provide that?

No, a thank you note will be well received, even a while after.

The STEM program is excellent. My daughter is a student and wants to go into engineering. The math faculty is really great, especially once you get to Calculus and beyond. Loomis has also made her love English, particularly writing and poetry, which she did not coming in. So there’s a good balance I’d say.

And yes - definitely send a thank you note! Admissions is absolutely swamped right now (because all the tour guides were leaving for break so they had to fit so many visits in) so I’m sure your interview was an appropriate length. Don’t worry!

Just to add, tours don’t get scored in any way
