<p>For first year students, is it advisable or necessary to have a car? Given the expense of initial purchase, insurance, parking fees and maintenance, it seems like a real luxury expense. Is good public transport available in the local area or to other major cities?</p>

<p>I would recommend not bringing your car unless you feel like you really need it. It is expensive to keep on campus and you might have to keep it in a lot far from where your dorm is depending on the dorm you are assigned. You also have to be prepared to take car of the car during the winter months which just isn’t fun.</p>
<p>Generally, you can talk a bus to class if you don’t like walking. A bus pass is free for freshman and will take you all around campus and around ithaca. You cannot drive your car onto campus during the day because there isn’t anywhere to park. If you need to go pick up something at target, wegmans, the mall, or places like that the buses run any day of the week.</p>
<p>If you are ever interested in taking a trip to Syracuse, for example, there are buses that can also get you there for a fee. There are also buses that go from Ithaca to NYC if you want to take a trip to an even bigger city.</p>
<p>Personally as a a freshman I did not have a car and it really wasn’t a big deal. I would say leave it home and save some money.</p>
<p>Also something to keep in mind: My friends who did have car were constantly asked for rides or people wanted to borrow there cars. Just be prepared to be asked for a lot of favors if you bring it.</p>
