Her major is Marketing, thank you for your reply.
So one thing is - if you’re an ROI person, marketing is typically a lower paid salary.
Wrong school - but this just came out yesterday from Wisconsin - you can see how much lower marketing is. Same with Indiana. Now, some might be location based but even when I got my MBA, marketing was on the lower end.
I don’t see Bing or UMASS show this info - so just as a comparator, if it matters to you in regard to spending more (it may not).
Bing has a page but I don’t see by major - they just show Bus Administration.
Assuming affordability, re visiting - and like one day apart - would be the best way to know. On paper, it’d seem UMASS has more to offer - but everyone is different - and definitely study the requirements of Honors to ensure they’d like the required classes.
I will tell you, I have a colleague in Phoenix who swears she’d rather eat UMASS dining than in restaurants near home - so that’s gotta be pretty strong.
Good luck.

If you are financially comfortable with all the options, your child is in a wonderful position of picking what’s best for them. Some of these cost differences, if they make little difference in your life now or in retirement, become almost meaningless in the scheme of things. You are in the wonderful position of letting her decide. Congratulations. What is “worth it“ is the wonderful opportunity you are offering to your child.
You’re welcome.
I’ve done the campus visit and taken the campus tour at both of these schools. I didn’t learn much about the educational experience from either one. It’s still a good idea to do just to get a feel for how the campus is laid out.
On their websites, the School of Management at both UMass and at Binghamton talk about experiential learning. I’d want to more about that. What does it mean at each school? What are some examples? Does it sound the same at both or does it mean something different at each one? How do current students feel about their learning experiences? I would want to make an appointment with a representative of the Marketing department at each school on the day that I’m visiting for the tour for the purpose of getting answers to those questions and to hear them talk about details and specifics regarding each of their programs.
On their Marketing web page, UMass says that their goal is for students to learn to “match wit, insight, and creativity with strategy and tactics.” Clearly they’re talking about a combination of soft skills and technical skills. In addition to learning how to do market research and data analysis, people who are successful in the field need to bring imagination and foresight. This reinforces my feeling that access to Amherst, Smith and the other colleges of the 5-college consortium near UMass is an asset not to be undervalued. Developing creativity, imagination and the other soft skills which the marketing departments are referencing comes from having as broad an education as possible and not being restricted to business courses. Of course, there are electives available in other departments at both Binghamton and UMass but I think that being able to expand these opportunities with access to seminars with small class sizes and top tier professors at these liberal arts colleges where advanced reading and writing skills are emphasizes adds value to the college experience.
Finally, I would want to know where graduates of both schools spend their post college lives. Are they spread all over the country or do they tend to be concentrated in Boston and New York respectively? Are their alumni networks which can help facilitate career development in each case, especially in the warly years I’d a career?
Just my 2 cents.
Thank you, really appreciate the details.
Just wanted to update. She got invited to join a scholar’s program in her major at Bing so we are leaning toward Binghamton. Thanks everyone.
Wonderful! Congrats to all!
