Any Asian parents here?

^ Beautiful post. I see that your children are going to be successful.

I see the Amy Chua model work all around me.

There’s more than one way to skin a cat, IndianParent

CCSiteObsessed, your daughter sounds pretty amazing. You must be so excited to think of all the wonderful things she’s going to do.

Precisely my point. The Amy Chua method is one such way.

Thanks, zoosermom! I have to remember to tell DD how much I admire her strengths which are so different from mine (which are more typically Asian). And to thank my mom (dad has passed away) for not forcing me to major in something for which I was ill-suited. I probably would have flunked out, anyway.

@Indianparent: Where is your DS/DD going to college?

If the only goal, the metric used to determine “it worked” is admission to an Ivy, then maybe it can sometimes work. There’s much more to life than attending an Ivy though including enjoyment of one’s childhood, HS years, college years, post college years, independence, ability to think for oneself, individualism, etc. In this context did Chua’s method ‘work’ or actually fail?

Still works in my experience.

It didn’t for Chua, from what’s been written, from my perspective. Of course someone else might think it did work but they may discount the other attributes I mentioned and hold Ivy admission as the supreme attribute.

Define what ‘works’ means to you in this context.

There’s much more to life than attending an Ivy though including enjoyment of one’s childhood, HS years, college years, post college years, independence, ability to think for oneself, individualism, etc.

Oh-----well---- if * enjoyment * is a priority.
;)

IndianParent, it works and it doesn’t work, same as every other thing in the universe. There are no guarantees for anyone about anything. Except for you, apparently.

Did you see the articles written by Chua’s daughters? All the things that you mention are evident in those articles.

Well OK, then nothing works, as nothing works 100% of the time. However, I have seen a very high level of it-works around me. Frankly, there was just one kid who rebelled.

Yes IP - I read the articles and from my own individual subjective opinion - it didn’t work very well.

From my own individual subjective opinion it works great.

hey eastcoast,

I read some of your previous posts …like 80 to 90 in 2 days…and I am confused. You say you are a rising hs senior, an international student, have already applied to Oxford, etc… Which one are you?

You might know IndianParent, he is pretty smart too (at least according to him) and also likes to post a lot! He also is obsessed with talking about Asians. Just wondering if you know each other?

I think we need a new emoticon, like the one I’ve seen on another forum: a smiley beating a dead pony with a cane. It will be very appropriate for this thread. ;)

Limabeans, thanks for bringing this up - I was also confused about our OP’s status…

Never said I am a rising high school senior, check out my info box. I am a high school * graduate * I am an international student. I deferred a year!
I didn’t want to mislead CC-ers into thinking that I am already in college.
But you are right, I posted a lot about law schools.

I really hate generalizing, but I really think for Asian students, this method will make another cookie-cutter applicant with high SAT scores, high GPA, national honor society, and a piano player.
