Any Guesses on the New Amazon HQ?

I don’t know. It looks like there’s a limit to how many doors.

Not everyone can read WSJ articles, @Iglooo . Here’s a link that all can read:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/may/08/canada-trudeau-government-migrant-asylum-seekers

The doors here may be metaphorical but the walls in the U.S. are real.

@Iglooo: Asylum seekers are a different class of immigrant than those seeking work visas based on needed education & skills. In short, the Wall Street Journal article is not on point regarding Toronto’s application/appeal for the new Amazon HQ. You are comparing oranges to apples.

“Amazon is very unhappy with Seattle’s new tax. What might that mean for Boston?”
Maybe Amazon’s HQ2 will become their HQ1.

Forget about Amazon. As I said, our city council is nuts. What they touted as Amazon tax would hit grocers and manufacturing businesses much harder than Amazon. One hospital said that in order to pay the tax, they would have had to take that money out of the cash they typically allocate to charitable giving. A family-owned grocer said that they would have to trim bonuses for their employees as the effect of that tax.

Even the newspaper will be taxed!

I understand that Detroit is not under consideration, but what a great opportunity to resuscitate & rebuild a once great American city. The Federal Government should add incentives for Amazon to locate in Detroit since it will ultimately be called upon to rebuild the city anyway. A missed opportunity in my opinion.

University of Michigan & University of Toronto are reasonably close for recruiting & joint research projects.

@Publisher Detroit’s submission to Amazon was a joint submission with Windsor, Ontario.

Amazon HQ1 to Bellevue!

@barrons – is there any room in Bellevue? Way back in the Stone Age (late 1980s), I thought Bellevue was pretty crowded. I can only imagine what it’s like now.

We went on vacation to the Pac NW in Summer 2014 or 2015 and were surprised how overdeveloped things have become on the Eastside. Redmond was totally unrecognizable. However, driving north on 148th ave NE (from NE 40th to, say, Old Redmond Rd) was still magical in places.

Although every other building there already has a Microsoft sign on it, there is still some room in Kemperville. I am sure Bellevue will be happy to provide some shelter for any Amazombian refugees that cross the lake.

Interesting article today in the WSJ - The Hidden Cost of Trying to Land Amazon’s HQ2

“Christopher Steele, chief operating officer of the Boston-based consulting firm Investment Consulting Associates, faced frustrations similar to Micron’s when economic-development officials in different cities told him they were too busy with Amazon to focus on some of his clients. He wouldn’t mention specific projects but said one of the cities he had trouble with is a top-20 finalist.”

"Mr. Steele said he was told we’re “really, really swamped with Amazon right now.” At an international conference for economic developers in the fall, Amazon was the sole focus of state and city agencies, said Mr. Steele.

“You start to think about the lost time and what is the opportunity cost,” he said."

The article explores the idea that cities who are spending time courting Amazon, don’t have the resources to explore other business opportunities for their city.

Amazon may put out a shorter list of finalist cities for HQ2 before announcing the eventual winner. The cynic in me thinks they already have their city but want to squeeze every last dollar of incentives.

Oh no questions about that!

CNBC rates Texas pretty high, I’d be ok with them going to Dallas but Austin would be a huge mistake. I just can’t see Miami as an option.

Meanwhile, Google announced that they are building a new tower next to Amazombieland…

Uh- oh,

@3scoutsmom why would Austin be a huge mistake?

@GTalum Traffic! Lack of decent public transit, lack of affordable housing…

They just announced that they are going to lease a building in Bellevue, WA for 4,500 employees. (Right near where I work right now, I hope Sound Transit adds more busses to Bellevue, or I’ll be standing on the bus every day!)

Yup. They signed a lease on the Expedia tower. So help us almighty.
